recommend tiny distro?

Post by road »

Hey folks,
Debating firing up some older extra hardware for folding around here if I can easily find a suitable linux distro that doesn't require a hard drive. Either a CD or Floppy bootable linux with F@H on it ready to go would be nice. Thoughts? Recommendations?

I used the linux router project running on some old stuff, no hard disk just booted from a floppy once created a ram drive, ran for months. I think thats called LEAF now, but I was curious if someone already invented the wheel for F@H folks that just want a tiny distro to bootup and fold. I'll google about a tad more...

First issue I guess is that with no permanent disk, I would lose work on power failure (ram disk goes poof).

This is what I use:

You run the TFTP Server on a Windows machine, and the other machines boot off the network and start folding automatically.

Cypher, this is exactly what I was after. I didn't have time today to figure out if these spare compaqs supports PXE, so I cranked out the cd iso they offer and it booted and folded right away. Good lookin out dude!

I'll let it do finish up this 1 WU then see if I can get a free thumb drive so it could store locally. Where are all those damn promo companies when we need em with there 32mb drives?! :? Probably won't support booting off a thumbdrive either, bleh.
