I just took advantage of a sweet deal on a 170 Opty so my last single core proc is now back in it's box.
I'm in the middle of doing a repair install on Win Server 2003 64 bit Ent.
Shortly I hope to have Linux running under vmware on this one and I'll switch it over to 38296. I'm hoping for about 1200ppd on this one.
Gotta stretch out as much as I can on Frosty before he gets back and figgurs out what I'm up to.

So....what are you saying....don´t spend all my money on vacation. I´m gonna have to build a Quad farm to pass you.

/me counts the days until the E6400 folder is up and running. Should put my little workbench in the 3700ppd range, or so.

My E6400 overclocked with the fsb at 400 and the multiplier at 8X (3.2ghz) has a ppd of 1375.69 according to fahmon and running the SMP for windows

You will love it!!

yeah... not sure the mobo I'm going to be using (budget system to start) will let me go that high. maybe I can win this month's contest and pick up another antec nine hundred to get away from the mATX.

Sad Isn't it.
That'll be the last time I spend anywhere near that kinda bux for a processor.

Shadco,
whats the 170 Opty cost to build? I saw it was kind of cheap on Newegg the other day...

I don't know that I would go building one from scratch.
I had an old system
MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum with an FX-55 relegated to doing patty melts for undr 100 ppd
It had a cheapy ATI Card, CDRW, 2GB of OCZ Platinum ram, an 80 GB IDE drive so I decided to breath new life into it.
I came across a nice stepping Opty 170 for 150 bux so I went for it.
It's burning in on 3025's now at 2.8Ghz and I think it will turn around 1200 ppd based on the current point scheme however long that lasts.
Gotta do something cause when Frosty get's back from vacation he's really gonna turn up the heat sp tp speak and it's another month or so before I'm gonna see any cheap Intel Quads to pump up the output. I'm not really sure how much better they yield it looks like I'm getting about 2200ppd for dedicated Linux e6400's at 3.2Ghz

If you have the parts the 170 is a nice investment. It is a great little overclocker.

I am able to run 2.7 Ghz on just stock cooling. The dedicated overclockers with beefed up cooling seem to be able to hit 2.9 to 3.0 quite regularly.

Now i'm getting tempted, just need to time it so its already built before my wife sees the CC bill.
what do you guys think, Chaintech Vnf4 Ultra or Asus A8N5X ?
Since i have never overclocked before (nothing worthwile anyway) i just might give it a try with this one.

Geeze I don't know. I forgot everything I knew about overclocking A64's it's a wonder I got this thing working mines based on an Nforce3 Ultra chipset. Bet there's someone in the AMD MB section that could tell you bout those 2.

As far as the motherboard, I imagine that Shad can give you better information on that. I run Biostar Nforce boards on all my dual cores and they are out of production now.
