I'm using Ubutnu 6.06 and 6.1 on 2 different hds. I'm doing everything on this box including Gaming. City of Heroes works well with Cedega, and I actually get a little more fps with Linux.
So! if anyone else has been put on the Linux path by overbearing DRM and system requirements post here!!

I know of a few co-workers that switched to Apple's instead. I'm just sitting well with WinXP Pro.
The DRM issue and other things have stopped many from jumping to Vista. I've heard that Vista prices have dropped $30 in general since the release.

After all these years and all the scummy crap Microsoft has pulled, I didn't think I could get any more disgusted. I didn't think I could be pushed to an even higher plane of contempt. I was resigned to the notion that MS, allowed to function as an unregulated monopoly, probably wouldn't push too hard on the limits of decency. Why draw any more attention to your borderline-legal position? But Vista has proved me wrong, it's an unabashed and unapologetic abuse of monopolistic power. And what's worse is, no one seems to mind. But is it bad enough to push me to Linux? How bad would it have to be, I mean, I like doing things with my computer - besides proving how technically savvy I am. Drive me to Linux, naw, but it might drive me to a PS3. Then again, I can't stand Sony either...
Well, I moved from Win2k to Linux, but I did recently try Vista Ultimate on my cousin's supped up system. (So I got to see the "full Vista experience" in all its glory).
I was left with the impression of:
"Is that it? You actually paid for that?"
What's most unusual is that Aero is nothing compared to Compiz or Beryl on Linux. In fact, its not even a fraction. (I'm not sure why people are that easily turned on by Aero).
Vista needs a DirectX 9 video solution to run desktop eyecandy. Linux can do the same (better) job with a DirectX 7 solution. (I ran it with a Mobility Radeon 7500, which is in the same league as an old GF2. Hell, I even ran it on a GF2MX, as really old budget solution)...You can run it on a TNT2-M64, but its really slow at that point.
After experiencing Vista, it re-affirms that I have made the right decision by switching to Linux.
Vista, to me, has a number of cons.
Price...I personally don't think its worth the price they're asking for it. (The Ultimate Edition is well within the category of "Its a ripoff").
It raises system requirements with the intention of getting people to upgrade their hardware. This is bad on two fronts as newer systems typically consume more power, as well, old PCs which are supposedly "obsolete" are thrown out. (double whammy from an environmentalist perspective).
Its security features does NOTHING in the face of issues like the recent ANI vulnerability. (In other OSs, security features actually do something, even when the OS has a security issue. Such security features help contain a threat such that it doesn't spread to others via the web...Have a think about why a BSD, Linux, Solaris, etc security issues never spread like a brush fire).
WGA, Activation, CD keys, etc...This is the electronic equivalent of taking your pants down, and offering your butt to MS for a rectum exam. Its one thing to reduce piracy of your product, its another to make the consumer jump hoops and treat them like criminals! The policy is basically saying: "You are ALL guilty until you pass my tests...I don't care if you paid. IF you don't pass my test, you are guilty."
And finally, DirectX 10 is nothing more than an excuse for MS to justify the consumer into upgrading to Vista for gaming. Its a pretty desperate attempt if you ask me.
If someone manages to hack/modify DirectX 10, such that it installs and runs on WinXP and Win2k sufficiently well enough, there's really no need to touch Vista. (I'm thinking this way, because I know MS has intentionally created these artificial limits to get people to spend money...Often these limitations are broken because someone doesn't like the situation they are driven into).

Wow, I wasn't aware of the DirectX 10 issue, that is horrid.
I have been running XP for a while, my new machine (this one) has Vista, but I am removing it ASAP. Sure there are a few nice features, most (if not all) of them (the ones i use at least) added to XP with a few powertoys, tweaks, and 3rd party software. And it runs world of warcraft horribly, (maybe with the gforce 7900 gs go it will do better, but I think it's vista not the card). Also, it has been proven, even with ALL performance options set to highest, visual effects OFF< that it is slower on everything but like 2 applications (maybe notepad), and that's only because of the prefetch/superfetch system.
Also, as far as that goes, I use DIskTrix UltimateDefrag that will arrange the data on the platters so what you want loads faster, so, probably even more of a boost then the vista modality.
Oh, I forgot to add, I am putting XP back on when dell unscrews a stripped one and I put in new gfx card, I also am interested in having a linux OS of some sort so I can boot either, and also cedega, I hear WoW runs faster on linux!

I got my Vista Business for free (Power-of-Together promo) but Iam hesitant to install (for obvious reasons) .
I do have Ubuntu sitting and waiting just incase .
For now my XP x64 is doing just fine , but depending on how Vista treats me and my hardware ; its nice to now Iam ready at any time to blow off Microsoft .

Well, OpenSuSe did not install on my system, not sure why, however I have jumped on the Ubuntu 7.04 (Fiesty Fawn) bandwagon and freakin' love it! So far, everythings works and my system runs sooooo smooth with linux. I would recommend to anyone thinking about trying out linux to give Ubuntu a try. Just playing with the Live CD convinced me to give it a try. It just might sway your thinking from the evil M$ empire to something that is truly designed for the everyday pc user. I've asked more than my share of stupid questions on here and am probably one of the lest technically savy members of LR, but Ubuntu is extremely easy to understand and the forums are excellent. It's not perfect, but I am at this very moment convinced that linux is the future and that M$ is the devil...HA!
I really cannot speak intelligently about Vista as I have only seen screenshots of it and am basing my opinion by what I have read and to be perfectly honest with you I have no desire to get it. Win XP has provided me with enough problems caused by M$. There is so much disdain for Microsoft that every Hacker in the world loves to beat their products to death, thus the WGA crap. My thinking is that M$ will one day push themselves right out of business and linux will save us all...HA!

Don't ask me, cause I know nothing! I'm lost in this world of technology and am barely holding my head above water. Thank the Good Lord for LR, otherwise I would have drowned years ago.
Yeah man, right on, I must try ubuntu, haven't read a ton on it, but I think I may have an image somewhere I could burn, seems cool. I can dual boot at least.... and if I get my hands on cedega I can play wow which is the main game I play right now, then I can use gaim for IM< and a browser, a word processor, hell that's most of what I use.
