is it possible and how can you install Linux on a hard drive with Windows 2000 already there, i believe you can make a different partition, one with windows and a separate for Linux

it is a LIVECD of PCLINUXOS 2006, it takes up about half a CD, if you boot the livecd and login and stuff, can it still partition the HDD when you click "install" on the desktop?

Just incase it doesn't, i'd try open GParted if it's installed and create the partition(s) that way. Otherwise you can use "cfdisk" -- Open a terminal screen and type "sudo cfdisk". It's usage is very like fdisk only alot more advanced.

You'll need a Root (/) directory, a swap partition and mayby a separate /home partition. A good idea is to create an additional partition in FAT32 for storage as some Linux distros have problems writing to NTFS partitions and windows by default can't see linux partitions.
