okay it was an automatic installation from a live disk.
disk passed the "check for errors" test beforehand.
changed boot order to try both harddrives, same error occurs.
any insight?

This will give an idea of whats wrong. Bypass the dox, fixboot etc part for now.
What is your drive layout? I mean tell me
order of drives
order of partitions
where is linux
and if you choose the deafult on installation when it asked you about partitioning and were to install GRUB. Did you also have windows on this machine?
(Feisty fawn is not the best solution for a p3. You could try pclinuxos, zenwalk, xubuntu).
a way to boot into your system is to boot from the live cd and (after you know where is linux):
go to console
> sudo -i
> mount /dev/*linuxpartition* /mnt
> chroot /mnt
now in the console you are actually in the installed system
now you have 3 options. You can install grub over anything on the mbr and set windows up boot later, Try to repair ubuntu grub installation (and be able to boot in windows probably), and install lilo and make a boot disk.
I'm using lilo bootdisk since grub doesnt work with my jmicron controller! Cute eh
for the first type
> gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
go somewhere before "root (alfafalfal)"
type "makeactive hd0"
save and exit to console
> grub-install '(hd0)'
For the second post me the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and the /boot/grub/device.map file
for the third
> apt-get install lilo
(insert a floppy)
> mount /dev/fd0
> mke2fs /dev/fd0
> umount /dev/fd0
> gedit /etc/lilo.conf
*find the line where it declares the root device and correct it to yours, like hda2 or hdb5 ,a,b,c,d,.. is the driver number 1,2,3,4,5,.. is the partition number*
> lilo /dev/fd0 *i think. It might not work, i'm in windows now, cant check*
Now i do what i can, no linux now here.. i'm kinda a newbie too, so we go trial and error. You could also post at the ubuntusupport forums, but it get a bit messy there with zillion of posts every hour, so it could be easily bypassed (mine did).

thanks for the help guys. i waited a week (posted the same exact post on ubuntu.com forums as well that day) and when push came to shove, i decided to try redhat seeing how i had a installation cd from the "linux for dummies" book i bought a while back.
installation went perfectly, but now i start the pc and i get this long checklist and then this:
"Fedora Core release 5 (Bordeaux)
Kernel 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 on an i606
localhost login: "
wtf i didnt set any passwords other than at the beginning it asked for me to set a "root password" which i did. help?
and yes its booting from the harddrive

Ah no login manager eh?...
Anyway, to login
username: root
password: the password you made in the setup
Dont worry about that, i believe its typical confusion. I had the same problem with you, WTF i never made an account what does it ask me for a pass??!?! ending up reinsalling it alot of times till someone told me to use root as username

Supposingly its KDE based.. dunno which version you found etc..
Try looking in their website
Also in console try to do these:
> kdm
(kde manager)
If it doesnt work try
> gdm *(i doubt it but you never know)
(gnome manager)
and finally try
>xdm
or
>startx
I mean to see if at least the X Window server is isntalled.
If its not look for info in their wiki on how to install Xorg, Kde and how to make a new user (with proper groups configured). I have no clue on this distro and its package management alltogether but i believe they should have a wiki which will get you going.
And even better install FC6 which is the latest

"failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). it is likely that it is not set up correctly. would you like to view the x server output to diagnose the problem?" i hit yes.
then this popped up...

Happy it finally worked . I was never able to decypher X server error messages hehehe.
Yshould definately make a new limited user, its a very bad idea to work as root!
The command is "useradd", i found this in a guide for another distro,
but it should be the same.
useradd -m -G users,wheel,audio,video,optical,storage,floppy -s /bin/bash stopthekilling77
> passwd stopthekilling77
and it asks to set up the password.
Everything between -G and -s are groups you want your account to have access to! These supposingly should be adequate.
Edit: Fedora Core 7 was released today

fedora core 7 hmmmm makes me wonder what i have.
anyhow um i got another question for you.
got a Belkin USB wireless device exactly like this one here: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductP ... _Id=179211
FCC ID: K7SF5D7050A
i just spent about an hour looking around online for a linux-hacked/supported driver, and i can't figure out how i'm going to get some internet on it unless i pull the cat5-cable-routed-up-through-my-walls-from-downstairs maneuver...
help?
***edit***
almost forgot my big gripe so far, how come it wont go straight to the graphical format???

Check here:
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/
I believe it has your device!! (Should be the broadcom driver)
Read the instructions there etc etc. It says it was tested on your device and it worked!!
If this doesnt work then you can install ndiswrapper. ndiswrapper is a windows .inf driver wrapper. You must install the device in xp, copy the .inf file to the linux partition and load it in ndiswrapper (thats how mine works)
Well basically both are wrappers, so you use win drivers. I hope they work.
I have no clue why it doesnt autostart kde. Neither i know how to do it.
Ask in fedora support forums
i think you can see which version of fedora you are running in the control panel of KDE.
Also try "uname -a" in console and look in the line for something like fc5 or fc6, i'm not sure if it will say the version.
Why dont you just download fedora 7 and install it from scratch?[/url]

i'm downloading as we speak, why not, you know :D and i tossed the notion of going wireless right now, i'm going to spend about 45 minutes putting a cat5 cable through the walls and up to my room. much faster connection. 100Mb/s beats 54Mb/s any day right?
i'll let you know how it goes man!

ok i'm in distress.
thought the hard part was going to be putting the wire through the walls but that seems to have been the easiest part of this.
i cannot figure out how to get this machine to boot up as graphical!
i'm going to try and find a specialized fedora forum to put this task to but i'm still hoping you might be able to help me! thanks!

Sorry i dont really have a clue. Only a few hints. Supposingly it must run on a lower runlevel or something, but i dont know anything more than that!!
You know maybe there is a workaround. Try updating your system.
> yum update
should work (or else just type yum to see the available options)
Hopefully since you have an old version it will also update Xorg and hopefully again fix it automatically....
Linux hates you hr hr hr :p.
Seriously it doesnt work well to me either.. The bootloader denies to see the harddisk!! So i'm booting from a floppy whenever i want to use Linux hehehe.
