i know how to turn them off, but im asking- Are they really necessary, from past experience all they do is give me little icons in the taskbar, slow down the computer, restart without me knowing, and the last one screwed up my internet

(im using windows XP Home SP2)

an auto update on vista managed to mess up my directx (had a .dll missing) or at least i assume that the reason and not something more sinister considering i've had the computer all of like a week..

Its nice for the Joe Sixpacks that won't remember. But I have never had automatic turned on. I just update the computer once a month or when I hear there are new updates out

Since I rarely use all the download bandwidth that's available to me, I set them on Automatic Download and Install when I shut down the computer, pretty much the best way IMO.
