Vista or keep using XP Home Edition?

Post by Aratae »

Should I switch to some form of Vista or just keep using my XP Home Edition? I game some, and finally gutted my eMachines T5010 and stuck in better (I hope) components: see my signature below. Guess I'm trying to ask would some form of Vista be more compatible with my set up now in terms of game play, or should I just stick to XP Home.

Thx for any info.
eMachines T5010 desktop, modified with Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard, AMD Athlon 64x2 4400+ dual core processors @ 2.3GHZ, 3GB Samsung DDR2-SDRAM PC-6400 (399Mhz)-[DDR2-800], 420 Watt PSU, Windows XP Home Edition and XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX (1/17/08).

Do you have any urge to play brand new games that are Vista only is the best question.

Personally I'd stick with XP rather than go Vista just yet.

Thanks very much for replying. K, I'll stick with XP then, I don't play any cutting edge stuff. Mostly Anarchy Online sometimes and alot of Secondlife (no matter what machine you have its hard there).

Thanks again :)

I will recommed the Vista Home Premium for you because as you knows the year 2008 has come and only a year is left for discontinuation of XP so its better for you to buy Vista.

Not actually true:
"With the addition of Extended Support, the support life cycle for Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Media Center Edition will include a total of five years of Mainstream Support (until April 2009) and five years of Extended Support, matching the support policy provided for Windows XP Professional," a Microsoft statement about the change reads.

XP Home and XP MCE were previously limited to five years of Mainstream Support, which is the typical support life cycle for Microsoft's consumer products. Microsoft's business-oriented products, however, typically include an additional five years of what Microsoft calls Extended Support. During the Extended Support phase, Microsoft supports products with security hotfixes, but doesn't support design change requests or warranty claims or provide non-security-related software updates.
So no need to get vista because you might be worried about unpatched bugs in a years time.

And a years time is very long, microsoft might have made Vista usable. If the support did run out next year, I'd rather sit with XP this year until microsoft works out the many kinks in vista, and yes, I have tried it (vista) and it bugged me so much I went back to xp.

I've tried both in a dual boot system and IMO the loss in performance in Vista made XP my default OS. I really liked Aero and some of the visual features in Vista but the hit in performance was tough for me to accept. I may just install Vista on another HD and then I can select my boot via bios and play with Vista some more later on.

i think sparky's got the right idea, however, i've had vista since June, and the only problems i've had so far were when i tried deleting "unnecessary" registry values(yup, that was stupid  ), with games, but that's expected, and with all of the beta software that i own, yet again, expected, but the resource managing really does suck, though.

Maybe you could wait for Windows 7 when it comes out in 2009 (meaning 2010), the details are vague, but the vague details look pretty sweet.

I've joined the VISTA haters forum recently.

The Toshiba laptop I have has VISTA on it. What a major pain in the behind this OS is.

I have way too many issues with the VISTA OS right now.

The latest is the printer driver/spooler manager not starting nor loading any "add printers" after our HP-1018 printer worked for a while and then VISTA said no-more.

The previous problem was VISTA not doing so well with F@H. F@H will not uninstall, nor function anymore. If I'm going to rebuild the OS, it will be XP Pro all the way, even if it has 1-year of updates left. Who cares! I have Win98SE going on two of our machines until this year.

KEEP XP !

PS, HALO loves XP as well. Forget VISTA.

For a new computer, Vista, no question.

If you've already got XP, and it's working fine for you, no point in buying Vista and having your XP license go to waste.
