i was just wondering what you fine people here at LR think on OSes

XP Pro 32, but if you factor in DX, I'd have to go with vista ultimate 32

for now, xp pro 32. for future, home premium 64

well i REALLY dont care about DX10/10.1 and by the time i get a NEW card for a rig, there will probably be DX12 and vista will be a not-so-fond memory, this thread is for a lappy

dx 10 isn't worth it even with an SLI and the 8800gt being the card. For one so far no one has proved dx10 is better. Just up the settings in 9 and its the same via console. So that dx10 is only just higher dx9... Doesn't seem to make a difference yet. And, if there is one that seems to USE the dx10 and not just a dx9 engine then the systems will bog on it.

vista is pretty.

Well after going back to WIndows XP from vista last weekend i stand by my choice in saying that vista is really crappy.

what is the "XP other" that someone thinks is good?

I voted vista ultimate 64-bit... but, I must be a rare bird because I have it on all the test systems, my office PC and my gaming PC all with no issues... plus since I have the high end cards laying around DX10 is a plus. Fire up COD4, BIOSHOCK, or Crysis at 1920x1200 at night with the lights out and have AA/AF maxed out at 1920x1200 and that is awesome...

In any case, my vote goes to any 64-bit version of Vista, 32-bit systems don't support enough memory, and XP x64 has awful software and hardware support.

I'm just shocked this list isn't overpowered by linux users. Saying that linux is the best for it

Currently there aren't many games, if any, that require over 4GB ram. The highest I've seen is Assassin's Creed which has a recommended 3GB ram.

XP Home 32 bit for me also!

I voted XP Pro 64 bit for the extra memory addressing and a couple of minor quirks. Very little practical difference though between 64 and 32, so I'd take the cheaper.

I currently have the x86 version of Vista installed on my "game box", and XP MCE installed on my general purpose machine. Now the only game I've tried that had both DX9 and DX10 capabilities is Hellgate: London. In that case, I just have to say that DX10 isn't all that great. The extra features it enabled were things like "motion blur", which I thought sucked big time. I just expected so much more out of DX10.

Now previously I had the x64 version of Vista installed to try out some of the virtualization, but there I had issues relating to the function of the AHCI drivers. So I reinstalled with the SATA controller set to "emulate IDE" and tried 32-bit Vista. But I'm not impressed with that either. So the only reason I haven't reverted to some flavor of XP is that I want a legit copy. (The retail version of Vista I have was compliments of Microsoft - I submitted a few bug reports during the beta tests - so when I built my latest "game box" I used that for the OS... I wish I hadn't done that now!)

P.S. I voted for "XP 32-bit Other" - the "other" in this case being MCE. It has the networking features of Professional, without some of the server type features. It was also cheaper than Pro used to be.

Single games? None, but it's nice having 2GB worth of programs open, and being able to launch a game without worrying about ram usage.

And some new games (The Witcher, Supreme Commander) are hitting up against the 2GB ram limit per program in 32-bit, which tends to cause stability problems with them.

ok, how about, if i had the best video card on the planet(and DX10.1 capabilities), what OS would i want then?

How much RAM will you be going for?

4gig go vista 64bit
less than 4gig, you'll be fine with vista 32bit
