Alright people, ridding my laptop of Windows soon
I plan on doing this
30GB - Swap and OS for i386 Spin by Dell of Ubuntu 7.10
- will contain VMware Server for Windows Needed Programs and Programming
- I still need Windows because I download most of my music from Amazon MP3 service, and there are no plans for a Linux Client, and it doesn't work with Wine
- There are Java issues in x64 so I can program fine in Eclipse, but it doesn't run. I need to boot into Windows. Either this should be resolved in i386, or I can just use the VM
30GB - Swap and OS for x64
- Daily Driver, will be on it most of the time, folding, and general use
- I've futzed with it enough, that I have everything working, Wireless, Bluetooth, Sound (for Last.fm), DVD playback, etc
30GB - for Windows VM
- I'm thinking formating as an ext3 Partition
- Even with Vista I only use about 18GB. I plan on using XP for the VM
30GB for Music
- Thinking ext3 again
29GB (remaining) for Saved Files
- again ext3
- I'll place the mail files, backups of my home partition, other random files that I need for Linux (debs I use, scripts I need, etc).
Question
- I know with VMware Server in Windows you can drag a file from the VM and have it copied to the actual OS. Can I do that in Linux?
- I have no idea how to create multiple partitions from the Ubuntu Live CD. I have always formated in Windows Vista, booted the Live CD and told it use the entire free space. I would think GParted would be how to do it. I know I need to create Swap for each of the OSes (any recommendation for optimal size?), and I know Ubuntu just creates ext3 partitions for the rest, do I need to do anything special?

Re: Linux Help
You just need one swap partition. Each OS will auto detect the partition on install.
You can create all the partitions with gparted first, then when installing, there's an advanced option.
You just need to make sure you select the correct ones when installing, you should also set the mount points when installing too. This can be done by selecting "custom partitioning"
Vmware in Linux does allow you to drag and drop, at least it does with vmware workstation.
You have 2GB? If so, then ~500MB - 750MB is more than enough swap space (just create a single swap partition on the drive!)

Re: Linux Help
I'm a little hesitant to do the one swap, I was reading a thread over at Ubuntuforums.org where the person was trying to do what I was doing, and it wasn't work. It would autoboot the first Grub Entry.
I assume you mean download the GParted Live CD and do it that way?

Re: Linux Help
I've had multiple linux installs on HDD's for years and never had any problems with using one swap partition.dicecca112 wrote:I'm a little hesitant to do the one swap, I was reading a thread over at Ubuntuforums.org where the person was trying to do what I was doing, and it wasn't work. You can open gparted from the Ubuntu live CD. In a terminal just type "sudo gparted" if it's not on the CD, try open "QParted" instead

Re: Linux Help
apparently ubuntu doesn't like multiple instances of itself. Oh well, installed x32 dell version, going VMware x64 and XP to fold and assuming eclipse and the JDK installs correctly I can just use the x32 to use Eclipse. Supposedly Amazon is gonna make a linux version of there MP3 downloader
