Depends on what you want to play, there are lots of good (free) games for linux but not all the games for windows will work in linux. Your best best is to search the repositories (Synaptic has a GUI if you dislike the terminal) for a game that sounds interesting to you and try one of those out before attempting to use
Wine or install a virtual machine (such as
VMware or
VirtualBox).
A few games that I like are
FlightGear,
Frets on Fire and
Tremoulous, all of which can be had in the repos (in Ubuntu at least), but there are plenty more games out there, just install them FROM a package manager (such as Synaptic) unless you know what you're doing.

Can't game in VMWare or VirtualBox, they create a virtual video card. Try Cedega or Wine

Yeah, $5 a month, first 3 months up front. What windows games are you wanting to play? Most games will work just fine with Wine but I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) Cedega has better support for Steam.
The only windows game I've tried was Starcraft and that seemed to work well with Wine.
EDIT: Seems you can get a kind of "watered-down" version of Cedega from their CVS, might want take a look at
this thread even though it's for Ubuntu...
