Want DirectX10 and >4GB Ram, which Vista?

Post by Skippman »

I'm wanting to upgrade my RAM to 4GB and I know I can't do that with XP due to the memory register limitation. So that means, for me, I have to defy myself and get Vista as much as I hate the thought.

Linux isn't an option as I'm a gamer.

So, which distro do I want? XP Home Premium 64bit seems the logical choice for me.

64 Bit XP is not very good, get Vista 64 Bit. That is what I am running, and I haven't run into many problems.

Vista Home Premium x-64 should be the OS for most of us here. Ultimate is just not worth the extra cost if you ask me.

I actually ment to type that in there. I have no idea why I typed XP.

Vista Home Premium X64 is what I intended to type. Thanks Bri.

That will work great for your needs. It is much more stable than XP 64bit.

In this thread Martin says he beleives there's no Ultimate edition of Vista Academic.

I'm planning to use a copy of Vista Academic 64bit. Is there something I should know about the Ultimate edition that makes it better than the straight 64bit?

IDK if the Academic Editions come with a 64bit disc but all versions of windows vista use the same key for 32bit or 64bit. So if the academic version (which is basically just Home Premium I think) only comes with a 32bit disc then your only chore would be to track down a 64bit disc (winkwink) and you can have 64bit using your academic key :drinkers:

It was my understanding that it was Home Premium x64 as well. I'll have my contact double check before he places my order. It's helpful to have a friend who runs a college IT dept.

Sounds good, Home Premium is really good, it's basically Ultimate less a few business features, all of which can be easily done with 3rd party software. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.aspx

I actually managed to pick up a copy of Business 64 bit which its pretty cool, everything seems to work.. As my older brother describes it, its got more 'stuff' than home premium and it also doesnt have all the useless crap that ultimate has.. so theoretically the perfect balance..

As part of my new system build I'm going to be changing O/S's to Visa Busines 64 bit from XP Professional. I'm wondering what problems I can expect to encounter switching from 32bit Windows to 64bit Windows. I use Zoom Player as my media player and the CCCP codec pack. I use WinAMP for MP3 playback. Other than that, the machine is primarially for gaming.

So what should I look out for?

when you first install only have 2gb of ram in, save your self hours of headaches as there is a hotfix that needs to be applied before you can use more than 3gb

I decided to upgrade to it a while back thinking it was pretty, but not worth my time. I did it and found myself using it 24/7. :snakeman:
