windows explorer freeze on specific location and folder name

Post by madhatter »

hi mates

this is the craziest problem ive had so far
while opening a specific folder, which ive used fine for months, win explorer (xp64 sp2) always fires up my cpu to 50% and freezes
HOWEVER, only when the folder is H:\JDownloads
renamed or moved it works perfectly
it probably started when while downloading to this folder (using JDownloader) i ran out of space, yet suddenly i had ~2GB free
i expected some sort of file tree corruption
only thing i could think of was trying to rewrite the whole thing
so i copied the entire 128GB (after relocating some files using search which can enter the folder) folder to another drive, deleted the original, copied the copy back
the copy on the other drive works with the original name
the now completely freshly written folder in the original location still doesnt (unless i change the name)

Active@ Hard Disk Monitor displays no warnings
i ran chkdsk with everything, SeaTools for win and an in depth scan of this and my xp64 partition using ESET Smart Security scan to no avail
also Total Commander Ultima Prime can enter the folder regardless of name or location
btw, JDownloader can still download there and the downloads seem OK
aaand when i boot another system, like xp32 sp3 or win7 64 sp1, there are no problems with the folder
ST31500341AS hdd, CC1H firmware
suggestions, please?!

thanks

Try reinstalling Java, or make sure it's the latest version running first.
http://www.java.com/en/download/ --> JDownload requires this.

You should run a virus scan and a separate "rootkit" scan

http://www.gmer.net/

It sounds like some malware / rootkit is trying to hide itself

as i said JDownloader works just about as well as it ever did, but for convenience i changed the default dl folder

however, when in booted up xp32 and had ESET go through xp64 it found some trojan based on hours old signature updates, so i think i will look for those rootkits right now...

thanks for the links

edit:
gmer found nothing
rootkitrevealer crashes
