Question about 64bit processor and windows XP

Hey guys, recently ordered my new computer and my processor is the AMD 64X2 4400 Toledo, and i saw on the internet a 64bit version of windows, now am i going to have to buy that to be able to utilize the 64bit processor? or will it work fine with the current windows XP SP2?

It will work fine with XP Pro. Unless you definitely have all the 64-bit drivers and all the software that will work on 64-bit XP Pro, you will be dissapointed.

win64 has some bugs even if your hardware piece has 64bit drivers

winVista (Longhorn) will be out this year, i'm just going to wait for that. Vista has native DX10 and 64bit support, among many otherthings, like a new filing system no more NTFS and no more registry!!!! YAY!!!! and i believe those wikkid little dynamic link libraries are finally gone for good too.

TGM, i notice you live in SW michigan, i live in W MI. The Grand Rapids Area :D

anyways, so you guys suggest just snaggin the regular xp pro and using that, do i have to download anything from microsoft or whatever in order for it to work? or will it be a straight installation like it would be with a normal 32bit.

TGM --> Vista will be sticking with the registry and NTFS im afraid

They dropped support for WinFS as it's too buggy.........

I'd say it might be added on via a service pack......but if it does, I'll stay clear of it.......it will be a MAJOR update (whole new filesystem!)

I will wait till it fully matures and the Service Pack is also stable (anyone remember SP1 & SP2?)

XP64bit is crap......it's only usefull for SOME servers which have hardware which is on M$'s HCL.......For desktop use it's very unstable as most drivers are buggy

Not a thing!
Boot from the XP cd.....press enter to install, press F8 to agree to terms&conditions etc.....(same as always)

The CPU will run in 32bit mode all the time....

You might want to backup saved games / e-mails etc. first!

wouldnt they incorporate a new convert command to support the new FS? I mean that is what it is now Convert C:\ takes it from FAT32 to NTFS without loosing anything or having to reformat.

They would.....and will I'd guess....
BUT since M$ software always has bugs, and they are stating WinFS is too unstable, I wouldn't risk using it until i'm sure it was really stable......messing with the GUI is one thing.....the file system? Not a chance! IMO

dayam! they're sticking with reg and ntfs?!?!?

WTF

so we're just getting an eye candy upgrade with DX10 and official 64bit support. *sighs* all the freaking internal kernel and link libraries and bloated corrupted registry will still be the axe in my back. even with an OS that's already over a year past release date!

and yah Soliex, stay with winxp pro 32bit for best compatibility and, for the most part, better performance as well.

Yea I have an Optron 170 that's 64 bit and dual core rnning on XP 64.

I'm finding some drivers are hard to find (nothing system related) umm some virtual drive software doesn't work. few other pains in the arse. so just do a bit of checking on your fav. software to see if it has 64 bit support .

usually you can just install into the program files (x86) directory for most 32 bit applications and theyw ill be fine. However tehre are the occasional ones that just wont' install on 64 bit so you need to find a x64 version of it. Also I've noticed a random startup speed on my win xp pro x64. Some tiems it will be 10 secs other times it will just go on for a long tiem usually I just hit restart and dont' wait it out. Other than that I did notice a bit better benchmarks on x64 than x32 but not very much to make up for the poor quantity of drivers out for it. usually you have to get it working to the internet before you can find all teh right drivers. My mobo didnt' come with sound drivers adn such for x64 had to get them from teh website, etc. wireless card didnt' have support for it

I've been running XP 64bit for the past year. No issues at all, and I love it. All my apps and games work fine.
