I want to start getting into Linux...hot and heavy.


I was wondering if anyone knew of some good online tutorials, almost crayola book style. LOL Or if anyone was interested in teaching a nubblet on some linux basics and stuff.

At this time i am getting fedora core 6 on my laptop and starting with that since it seems to have a pretty good beginners guide and stuff..

anyone with anything..come one come all!!

actually i would have suggest Ubuntu, because of its simplicity and large user forum support. Your best way to learn is by doing. You want to do something, go online research how to do it and struggle through it. And I would get an elementary book on linux, just the basics. I learned with Linux for Dummies which taught me the basics using an include Knoppix DVD.

I have been playing with fedora 5 off and on for a while, still learning. I have thought about redoing the machine I have the fedora on and trying ubuntu everyone seems to say its the best thing going for noobs. I have it downloaded, just haven't got around to putting it on.

i found debs easier to use than RPMS

I got started with SimplyMEPIS. It's really easy to use and I had practically no problems with it.

I use SUSE. I find Ubuntu is fine but it its harder to setup. It's by no means hard but you do have to d/l software and edit files to get setup. Wifi on a laptop is an example. Simply MIPS is like Ubuntu, based on Debian.
I never liked Red Hat.....and now Fedora. Used them a since RH7. Just a personal preference.

With Suse I can install it, configure it VERY easilly and after it's first boot I'm connected via wifi using WPA and have all the software I need on one DVD. A quick online update and installing some codecs and im setup.
The beauty is, if I want to learn Linux, I just switch to command line......
With Suse restoring settings like GFX is soo simple....most things can be fixed by a few single commands.......and you still can do it the "linux way" if you want to learn.

I think the best thing you should do is try a (good) few distros.......they all have their own quirks.

I have just taken the jump to Ubuntu myself. I found it to be much easier than I expected. Ubuntuforums.org is a great place to learn about things as well. I am dual booting right now, but I have found replacements for everything I use in Windows, other than Excel for our reviews here. For Excel, I use an app called Crossover Office which allow you to run certain windows programs in Linux. It works fantastic, though after the trial period wears out, you have to pay $40, but that is relatively cheap.

In fact, I have not booted into Windows all week on my laptop. I wrote and edited an entire review in Linux this week (will be out soon! - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3).

Oh, and by the way, I was talking to Nate today, and our new Legit Server will be running Ubuntu Server! (Dapper - 6.06)

why 6.06 and not 6.10

Dapper is still the LTR of Ubuntu, and Edgy can be a little Edgy, which is not a good thing for a server. I personally am running Edgy atm and all is running fine. I did have issues with my Broadcomm wireless, so I bought an Intel Pro Wireless card that will hopefully help me be fully setup. I have not been able to run the new nvidia driver to enable the 3d on my laptop because of th issues.

been out of the ubuntu loop since 6.06 and its kernel issues with Logitech Mouse and Keyboard Sets. Been on Windows since August, after running Ubuntu for almost 9 months.

well since i couldnt get my wireless to work right with fedora, i installed Kubuntu and so far i like it!!!

My G/F/ bought me almost $100 worth of books on linux so i have been doing a lot of reading lately!!
