Do any of our linux readers use Beryl to manage XGL/Compiz? If not, give it a try!

http://www.beryl-project.org/

I found step-by-step instructions to install for Ubuntu Edgy on their wiki. Works for both Gnome and KDE.

Let me know what you think if you try it out!

XGL ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xgl ) is the famous open source 3D desktop that has the 'cube' when switching between desktops and many other 3D OpenGL effects like wobbly windows and transparency.

Beryl is a layer on top of XGL that makes it easier to use. That's about as much as I know about it (see wikipedia link for more info), but it is a blast to play with... although a tad buggy.

I've read up on Xgl, never used it yet. Mainly because I dont use Linux on workstation machines, so no use for a GUI, straight console FTW.

Ya, I'm lucky enough to work at a company that will let you do things like this... I've built my own workstation and am running Ubuntu 'Edgy Eft' on it.

I have been using Beryl in Ubuntu almost since day one that I did my first Linux install. It has some pretty neat eye candy, though it does slow things down a bit. It was really not that difficult to install using that wiki either.

I love the cubed desktop... almost like multiple monitors, only not...

If you have an nVIDIA card with Ubuntu's Edgy Eft OS, here is the link I used as instructions:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Inst ... dgy/nVIDIA

however, searching http://wiki.beryl-project.org should allow you to find what you need.
