OEM and Vista

Post by Tim Burton »

I want to get Vista Ultimate. I saw that price and thought it was pretty good, compared to $400. Is that just like the retail, except without the box and stuff?

I remember reading that MS was going to limit Vista to 10 re-installs for some versions or something like that.

nice link!

This is the most important part..

OEM software is also tied to the motherboard it is first installed on. Unlike the retail versions of Windows which can be transferred to a new computer, OEM versions are not transferable. What about upgrading hardware? Microsoft says that anything is fair game, except the motherboard. Replacing the motherboard in a computer results in a "new personal computer," which the company considers to be synonymous with a transfer. It's not permitted with an OEM edition of Windows.

THAT is the BIG difference between OEM and RETAIL now!

Microsoft sucks. I'm gonna give it some more time to find a solid cracked version of Vista Ultimate.

And when they figure out how to get around any authentication things, then I'll be set. I can get windows updates from a third party.

But currently I'm not even interested in upgrading since I'd need a new computer anyway.

I really don't mean to be a hater, but the above stuff is 1/3 of the reason I'm using ubuntu full time now! It's worth the learning curve.

EXACTLY!!

Sucks but it is true.

Mike

and the damn installing of software needs to be implemented the same as windows - double click file, it then asks where to install, to put icon on desktop, etc ;)

now that I'll finally have the computer and network rooms all set up this weekend, I'm going to put one of my old boxes to work on Ubuntu... just for S&Gs.
