Ubuntu 7.10 = Gutsy Gibbon

The next version of Ubuntu after Feisty Fawn, is Gutsy Gibbon.

This is still beta though right? Is there an ETA for the first stable release?

The one thing I long for is the completion of the open 3D driver for Nvidia cards. (See the Nouveau project).

This way, all Nvidia users will have 3D support out of the box. Which means its one less step in the install process. (Currently, proprietary Nvidia drivers aren't included for idealogical and potental license reasons...You have to install them as part of the installation process of a distro).

So for example, in the Ubuntu case, you will have (in the future), desktop eyecandy fully working out of the box with little or no configuration required from the user.

Hmmm. Looking at the Ubuntu roadmap, its a 6 month cycle.

7.10 is gonna be a version that adheres closer to the ideals of the "Free software" concept. (That is, anything that isn't available in source is not included...No inclusion of binary blobs, etc).
