Good question. I have the same problem.

The ones i have tried (mp3gstream, qt alt, qt pro) seriously mess up the video quality when converting to avi.

I think the MOV format is already so compressed that a lot of conversions screw it up.

I never messed with MOV very much.

Adobe premier would probably do it, and some of the Ulead products also.

My old Kodak used MOV format, but the quality was so low even with a 5MP camera that it wasnt worth trying to make it viewable on a regular sized tv. It looked good on taht tiny screen on the camera, but taking 320X240 and stretching it out just doesnt work well ;)

thanks for the info.

The problem with my camera (nikon L6) is that it captures .mov up to 640x480@30fps. The file ends up being huge!
I mean 1min and 30sec is around 90mb!!, so some better compression codec is needed.
It's a shame cause its a fairly good camera (seriously lucking alot manual control though). I used to have another nikon before and it was using mov too, but i thought hell there is no way they still use this pain in the ass codec-container. Should have asked first :(

my panasonic fz18 does the same thing except the format 16:9 and its 848 x 480 @ 30fps. So it EATS up space. 100mb for less than 1 min of vid. It can't be that compressed if the stats are like that

Tried radtools it's good and fast. At first i tried converting to divx with various settings but i was troubled since everything i did seemed to give me alot less crisp outcome than the original. After trying extracting to uncompressed (2,4gig fot a 90mb .mov ouch) and handling the compression and preview with virtualdub, i noticed that the reason of the blur was that i had "postprocessing @100%" in ffdshow  :toimonster:
Stupid, unchecked it and it was fine. The differences between source and divx were hardly noticable using the highest kbps setting in divx codec and size almost half! Now i just need to try different kbps+quality settings in the codec to find the sweetspot for my camera!
Thanks

Hi, nh5111, you may refer to this thread:

However, remember not to rip things that are not owned to you.

And here is a detailed guide about how to convert and edit mov files:
