I have a hand me down laptop with Microsoft 2000 installed. My Norton program will not intall on the 2000. Are there any free virus protection downloads out there that I could get by with for this thing?

I've been using AVG AntiVirus for quite some time now.

http://free.grisoft.com there are pay versions at the site, but just look for the free version (Antivirus and Antispyware). http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-p ... /0?prd=aff is the direct link, if it will work.

Avg or Avast! I can't really tell which to recommend. Have used both and they worked great for me. Another one is avira, but its update process was a real pain in the ass for me,it was the exact opposite of seamless and fast

If they would make the pay version lifetime rather than a fortune for the yearly crap, I would buy it.

A vote for Avast, here. Did a virus scan with AVG on an infected HDD (not mine, connected via USB adapter to my laptop since original comp won't boot) and it was unable to delete all infected files after several (6?) scans. Did a scan on another PC with Avast and second scan showed clean. Did a scan with AVG again and another PC with Symantec Antivirus and HDD showed clean.

I use AVG but I've used Avast! in the past as well...they both work really well, much better than Nortons (which is a resource hog). I like AVG over Avast! but they're both free and both work well so it's your call.

I have used AVG, and it is a solid program, though there may be some conflicts with Steam if you play Half-life or any other Steam games. If it does conflict, I suggest going with avast or possibly something else.

I use Steam and have had no problems with AVG.

Also, just a note, as of last Thursday/Friday AVG Free version 8 has been released. There are a couple new features that have been added. I've installed it on a couple of my machines here, but I've been so busy this week I have really had time to see how it's doing.

Kind of disappointed in the new free version AVG 8.0 because the email scanner only works for 30 days.

i have used McAfee for some time and slowed down the computer allot with updates went to AVG and worked fine ran fast
