Wanted: Anti-Virus software
hey all...
looking for recommendations for a virus software that works. I have used AVG for years, but with the somewhat recent release of AVG 8, my experience has become less than favorable. constant crashes, failure to automatically update, running unscheduled scans whenever it wants... I can't take it any longer.
I need something that is fairly effortless, as I will be ending my usage of AVG with all my clients as well as my own machines, so I want something that my clients can have without even realizing it's there... as use to be the case with AVG. I'll continue to research on my own, but I'd love to hear first hand from users as to the strong suits of their favorite AV software.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
Throwing it out there, I'm using the 64-bit version of Avast! (free edition) and I have to say I like it more than AVG.
I'm sure there are better paid subscriptions out there, but I'm pretty happy with this! So far it's found 2 incoming viruses and stopped them in their tracks - and I've only been using it for 2 weeks.

I second the suggestion for Avast! Been using it for a couple of years now (mostly for scanning other people's systems) and I've found it to work better than AVG.

if your willing to pay than Kaspersky internet security (or antivirus) is the way to go. best virus dection, it wont flip out and give you false positives for stupid stuff like keygens or what ever that are supposedly "Rootkits" and it runs incredibly lightweight

One more for Avast here. I too didn't care for the newest version of AVG.

It does for me, and I found KIS8 to be a bit annoying, but I'd still recommend KIS over anything else.martini161 wrote:if your willing to pay than Kaspersky internet security (or antivirus) is the way to go. best virus dection, it wont flip out and give you false positives for stupid stuff like keygens or what ever that are supposedly "Rootkits" and it runs incredibly lightweight

Looks like you have your choices
Now all you have to decide is if you want to go free or paid.

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
I still vote for AVG - had some updating problems, but they seem to be fixed now. Never had the scan run except when I had it scheduled.
I tried Avast on my 64bit system, but I just didnt think it worked as well. Kaspersky I believe is the best right now, but when there are free alternatives, why spend the money ;)

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
We use AVG 8 all the time. have noticed some updating problems but only spotty. Everyone I've talked to likes Avast! too. I've never tried it myself but it's free and AV doesn't seem to be the problem here lately it's more Spyware/Malware than anything else. That's why I stay so busy! AV doesn't catch spyware

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
yes, but AVG 8 was to take the place of AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware in one package.
I have to update at least one of my computers EVERY day, as it won't do it automatically. All of my machines are set to scan at 2am. The other night, my main machine began a scan at 7:30pm. My machines run 24/7 every day, so it wasn't making up for a missed scan.
As for crashes, I've probably lost around 48-50 hours of Folding in the the last week alone because my server (most important data is there) crashes with different avgxxx.exe errors all the time. Easy enough to correct when I'm home with a reboot, but a real pain when I'm away from home.
I don't even mention the virus/trojan/malware I had because I brought that on myself for surfing sites outside my safe zone. stupid mistake on my part, not the fault of the AV software.

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
Yeah, I've had some issues with AVG 8 as well. Maybe the problems only occur in the free version
I've always heard good things about Avast! but have yet to try it.

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
I don't think Avast is as easy to use as AVG but once you get used to it, it's pretty simple. Auto updates both virus signatures as well as the program itself.

Not a very good selling point if so. "well, the free version has issues, maybe I should throw them some money and hope the pay version is better"... ummm, no.Sporg wrote:Yeah, I've had some issues with AVG 8 as well. Maybe the problems only occur in the free version

Re: Wanted: Anti-Virus software
Avast, AVG... but what about Avira? There's a free version that I found pretty kickass.
Works well, catches everything for me so far and it's pretty light.

Bottom line is that I don't like the new free version. I'll have to check and see if the old man is having issues with his - he's got the pay version.
