Music/File Transfer To New PC

I got my new HP Pavilion Elite m9450f all set up with my new 22" widescreen and everything but the only thing still remaining to be done is to transfer all my files from my old Windows XP SP1 PC with all my music and files over to my new Vista SP1 rig but I cant figure out how to do it or whats required. I managed to get an Ad Hoc network set up but I wasnt able to figure out how to access the files on my old PC from my new one to do the whole click and drag.

I have both rigs set up less than 10 feet from each other. Both have access to wireless internet and both WERE directly connected with an ethernet cable but that didn't seem to get me anywhere either. Is there a specific program or just something I'm not doing right? I was able to get the old PC to "successfully connect" to the Ad Hoc network I'd made with my Vista machine but I couldn't figure out where to go from there. All partitions and drives on my old machine are set up for sharing too so I know thats not an issue.

Any help guys? I know there's a program they sell that does all the work for you and comes with a cable but I know there's an easier way that doesn't involve a one-time program lol. Help guys!!

if everything is all shared on the old PC, and they are on the same network, than vista should discover it. is network discovery turned on in vitsa? try going into computer and typing "\\[OLD COMPUTERS NETBIOSNAME]\Documents and settings or what ever, it should prompt you for a user name and pass.

i PM'd Apop already and he suggested I just pop in the HD from the old PC and run it as secondary then click and drag so I think I'm gonna try that first.

I'd keep the MP3's off the new rig. My friend just got back from Vista Forensics lab. It's like NARC-WARE extreme on Vista. After what he's told me I'm not going to switch to Vista until absolutely mandatory.

Really? Because I was under the impression that the illegality of the mp3's was IN the sharing and I have sharing turned off so I'm technically only downloading off of others. The people who are sharing the mp3's are the ones at fault if I'm not mistaken.

Oh and no go on the drive swap that Apop mentioned. My older Maxtor 300gb drive doesnt have the same HD connection that my new rig uses. I'm not sure what the new name is exactly but its definitely not the original wide connector I have on my old machine. Aren't there cheap cases made for drives that basically power and convert a normal internal hard drive into a portable/external drive?

Sure are! Directron's got a pretty good selection of them to. I don't know the interface of your current HD.

And Microsofts gone full NARC ware with the DRM stuff. One of the major reasons I'm not running Vista right now.

Yeah, it's best to have your music collection in a free format like FLAC or OGG if you're running Vista otherwise you will have DRM issues.

Hmmm, for some reason I don't think Vista will ever be a problem for me.
Yep, I hate Vista. Had M$ actually included WFS like they said they would it might have changed my mind. I have a sneaking feeling that XP might be the last M$ OS that I use. Sorry, don't intend to flame, but the DRM thing is just another reason to steer clear.

Well I finally got it taken care of. ended up finding a $15 cable at Micro Center right near me that converted IDE, SATA, and all other types of HD's into a USB plug-in drive and even comes with a wall plug to molex 4 pin connector. Not a bad deal for the money considering it just made it pop right up and didnt mean adding anything to the inside of the computer like I would have done or set up a long network transfer over wireless....yay.

thanks for the help and suggestions though. the only reason why I havent gone back to XP is because I dont have a legit CD and key that could get me all the service packs so instead of spending more money just for the OS I'd rather just be happy with the setup running like it should for now
