Well I just did a bit of googling to find just that, but I was a bit overwhelmed by the tons of hits to my search.
What program do you guys recommend? I just need to recommend a good, free, easy-to-use program to my friends who want to make sure their kids are okay on their PC.
Thanks guys!

After a quick bit of googling, SafeSquid and K9 both look pretty good. SafeSquid looks to be a lot more powerful and customizable but K9 looks easier to use. Just remind your friend that any 'naughty site' blocker can be bypassed easily by a chimp with half a brain, let alone a determined 10yo.

i havent checked it out but Vista has some built in controls....

K9 is good, and there is a simple "parental control bar download out there.

If they are older it might be better to go with a hardware firewall with add ons (like Dans Guardian)

PeerGuardian set to block HTTP, run minimized, at startup, auto update. Use a program like Adbin to block websites via your host file. The problem with PeerGuardian is it setup to be a bit overprotective so you may have to do some initial tweaking before it is setup and ready to go.

Set their homepage to http://www.safe-google.com/ or whatever kid site they visit most often.

Looking back it would've been nice if all porn sites had to have .xxx as their domain. It would've made this blocking adult content as a parent much easier. It would've also made searching for good porn more convenient.

You can do it soooo simply through OpenDNS. Just setup your IP to pass through OpenDNS on the web. Then, you will never have to worry about loading it on computers, and having anyone try to go around it. Best of all if your WiFi is unsecured, big deal, it puts up the parental control wall to outsiders too. Just make sure your Workgroup name is a long one that is not easily guessed.

OpenDNS is a better DNS service. We make your Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable. It's free, and there's nothing to download.

Find out why millions of people have already made the switch to a better Internet with OpenDNS.
Start using OpenDNS! It's free.

Taking a few minutes to unbundle your DNS service from your ISP's Internet connection means a safer, faster, smarter and more reliable Internet experience for everyone in your household.

oh wow, I didn't know this was a feature of open DNS (which I have been using for quite some time).

Might have to check that out.

OpenDNS and K9 are both good, but the features, flexibility and customization that SafeSquid offers, is too good.
These HowTos on howtoforge will give you some idea of what you can do with SafeSquid -

I stick with K9 as it's easy to set up and comes in pretty handy in most cases

I prefer OpenDNS. It took my little hacker of a nephew just over an hour to break k9 and safesquid, one at a time. (Kind of as a challenge for him and testing for my younger daughter.) He never did completely figure out OpenDNS though, since it's a quieter option. My nephew is 8 by the way.

Haha I just realized this is a bumped old post.... April 23 yeesh..... Sorry guys
