AVG or Avast?

I say kaspersky. overclockers.com compared 37 different antivir's and it was the best overall (most virus catches and least system hog-ing)

first I used norton but that was just awfull. next was nod32 - it was much better but since I use kaspersky (it has automatic 4h update) I never had a problem.

Not sure what the details are, but there's apparently a "trial version" that you can register for. And it seems you get a discount "coupon" or something that you can request when signing up for the trial.

ahh, ok, they do have a trial version. I went ahead and installed it, updated the software, and I'll do the full system scan tomorrow, as I already did a full scan with AVG today. Really good info here, and the funny thing is that Kaspersky actually uses less resources than even AVG......noticed their menu pages load faster, and you can do a lot more with it, as in you can be doing an AV update and scan at the same time, and still have plenty of resources left to do something else, even on this system I have now, lol. Really good find

I use AVAST, I find it stops more than AVG...
It blocks scripts running in firefox/IE -> It warns me b4 a script runs and then blocks that connection.....
AVG never blocks any script from running! It just looks for actual viri...not blocks
Prevention is better than cure!

I work for a ISP doing tech-support,
Norton and McAffee are just a joke,
AVG works, uses little resources, but has a habbit of blocking your incomming and outgoing mail server ports (easily fixed, but I get ALOT of calls from joe sixpack who just doesn't understand)

Avast NEVER gives me or any customers any probs!

This is more to do with firewalls, but you can get BlackICE online, the software you can download freely- just need a license to use it, which is like 40 dollars a year (or you can look for a keygen ;p)

I haven't seen if Proventia is more effective or not, apparently it is their all-in-one anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall solution.

The update is actually the full-release, but you need a key to install it and make it work. It has port protection and application protection, but I find application protection annoying so I turn it off- it's small, uses very little resources, and I've used Zonealarm but I prefer this over that just in interface and ease of opening/blocking ports and everything else.

I've always been happy with Symantec Corporate. Nowhere near the bloat of the home version, and the newest version (10) has an integrated spyware/malware scanner. One program for viruses and spyware is nice, and it seems to catch everything.

Check with your schools/universities (if you attend). Many times they provide free corporate versions of anti-virus software.

It is also the only 64-bit scanner I have seen so far, so it's a requirement for my laptop.

NOOOO!!

I wouldn't recommend BlackICE to anyone as it is a POS software and firewall, reasons:

1)If you know the famous leak test by Steve Gibson, then you would know that BlackICE failed it earlier. This however got 'patched' by the ppl that develop it. Steve had done some research, and saw that the only thing they did, it was blocking the port the leak test uses

You changed the port number and it leaked again, how safe is that :D ?
2)He wrote them about this 'workaround'. This still persists, and even worse: the sw/fw labels it as a trojan/backdoor of some kind when it only tests if the fw blocks outgoing threats..

yeah, end of rant

try something along the lines of Outpost (best there is IMO)

I think you have it wrong.....what was happening was Steve's software was causing blackice to think your pc was hacked....it then asked if you wanted to submit a report....people then reported their pc's as being hacked (by themselves...."127.0.0.1" ;P )
This caused people e-mailling GRC.com.....

Kaspersky vote from me. Since the Sony XCP debacle, Trendmicro has lost the $200 a year they were getting from me for the 5+ licenses I use. The switch to Kaspersky was actually less, paid $200 for two years for 1 file server + 5 workstation licenses.

For free, I use Avast because Avast has already advanced to supporting 64-bit Windows with their free solution.

hey i think avast is crap because i installed avast and restarted the system and i couldn't log on until by bro fixed it. i use avg and it is fast and more reliable than avast.

I've been using Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall and it has antivirus and spyware checker integrated in. It's not free but has worked great so far.

I've been using AVG for more than a year now and am completely satisfied with it. KNOCK on wood, but I haven't got a virus on my home PC to date. Unlike my work pc, which is safeguarded by Sophos, I somehow got the Qoolaid trojan. Pain in the butt to get rid of, but I managed, with very little help from my IT (no help) dept. AVG gets my vote hands down and as cheap as I am, I would even pay for the license if I had to....

I got a problem with AntiVir. It was mentioned here so i went and downloaded it. it works great on my desktop comp so i went and put it on my girlfriends laptop. on the laptop, it totally lags/sows the computer down. it takes about 10 minutes to load everything on a restart!! i dont know why it would do that. i dont have any other antivirus program running. they are installed but i told them not to start on startup. anyone have any thoughts or places to start?

well, i guess i fixed it...there were still some norton programs running in the background. so i deleted norton totally, reinstalled anitvir and no problems now

Avast stopped updating my virus definitions automatically. Anyone know why? I swithced over to AVG because of it.

Antivir is an excellent free virus program. I use it as well.

I say dump avg and avast.

I say if you want to pay get kapersky.
If you want free get AVG.
AVG is one of the lightess and most effective Antivirus.

Another thing I trully think using Norton is the worst thing you can do to your PC.
It is so heavy for your PC takes so much resources that its not worth it.
One more thing Norton detects SpyBot search and destroy as a virus wich makes me beleive that norton are sons of &*?*&?.
Why detect something so great like S&D as a virus...because its free of course.
These guys are there for the money , they all are but this is the worst POS I have ever seen.
BTW if you want to protect your PC all the way also get S&D.
Warns you of every registry changes and lets you accept or refuse.

I have been using AVG for about 3 years now and it works great. Plus I think, the new free version is Vista compatible. I tried avast as well and didnt like how it updated. That was a while back though and it may have changed.
