Excel destroyed my data!

Post by Sovereign »

I have a spreadsheet for my senior project in Political Science that contains lists of members of Congress. Each sheet also has data for gender (0 - male, 1 - female), party (0 - Democrat, 1 - Republican), state (listed by US Postal Service abbreviation) and several other variables. For some reason, when I Sort and Filter (Excel 2007), sometimes the row associations are lost and I've had to re-enter two columns so far. Like I said, some variables stay "in place" (row associations not lost) but others lose them as soon as I sort. For example, a sort by Party ended with McCain a Democrat, Kerry a Republican and other oddities. I specified that the cells with Numbers are, in fact numbers using Format Cells.

What's going on?

Hit the Insert key. Sometimes that gets pressed and wipes the cells instead of allowing changes.
