ive used AIM for a long time i dont think ill be leaving it soon. however its the only instant messenger i use and sometimes i feel like im in a hole when people talk about msn and google talk. is there any reason why i should leave AIM or use another IM program at the same time?

I think it probably boils down to what the majority of your friends use. If all the people you know use AIM, then there's probably no need to switch, but if more people you know are using MSN and Google Talk exclusively, and you want to talk to them too, you should check out a multi protocol IM program.
My choice is:
http://www.pidgin.im/
The interface is a little bland compared to the flashy/customisable stuff in the other clients, and as far as I know it doesn't do video chat, but I've come to like it's clean interface.

+1 on Pidgin, i have users from AIM, MSN, Google, and yahoo and can have them all showing to chat on it.
I think it has video chat for google now....

I use Trillian as well, since my friends like to use a mix of MSN and Yahoo.
