Hi guys I want to change my anti virus as the one I have doesn't let me do as much as I would like to do and was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction of a free one that lets me do as much if not more than what AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials allows me to do.

i usually dont install antivirus until i already have a problem

but, when i do need one, i install ad-aware / malwarebytes antimalware / spybot search and destroy / hijackthis / AVG free

i actually have an nlite'd copy of XP for 2D benchmarks which comes preloaded with a redirect for google to webresult6.org which requires hijackthis to fix lol

I use Symantec Endpoint, but for a free one I always recommend Avast home

Avast was my free recommendation for years, but I've since jumped ship for MS Security Essentials.

What particular features are you looking for that aren't available is MSSE or AVG?

Just being able to do things with the viruses. While I am happy with MSSE, it just does its own thing and I would like one that I can exit from the toolbar rather than having to use task manager.

Avira and MalwareBytes

At the mo I am using avast but I am now going to investigate "Avira" as "Avast" is eating too many resources in game mode.

It seems that MS Security Essentials is actually one of the best if not THE best right now.

I have AVG on a couple systems yet but like you, AVG has become a hog. I am going to be switching mine over to MSE pretty soon I think.

Well I have found that Comodo have an anti-virus as well as a firewall. Is it OK to use these combo programs or do they do a rubbish job??

MSE is the only free one I really like right now, but if you really want a change, I've had good luck with eset nod32. You can get a free trial from their website as well.

Ok I have been using the Comodo one for a while but after the last update, it is just carving though my resources. Is there one that exists that doesn't use that many resources, especially when it is meant to be ideal?? I think however that I am going to have to settle for the one I have as this does seem to be the trend nowadays.

In my endeavors into free AV Avira seems to be the best. It's a tad bit on the touchy side but it works better than most. The only problem with Avira free is the annoying pop-up ad after every time the program updates itself. Good news here is there is a small app to remove the ad.
