Vertical color lines screen with no graphics/site info

At times when this happens I sometimes can hit the computer and it works, where as at times I have to turn off the computer and start up and it works but also at times I do nothing but wait and it corrects itself.
I am wondering about a fix or is this a need of a new purchase?
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300.

Probably one of 3 things:
1) Video card is dead.
2) Cable from computer to the monitor is bad. 1st thing I'd check since it's the cheapest.
3) The monitor is bad.
What exactly are you banging here the computer or the monitor?

This is a lap top and I just slap it a little on the side or top, right now it is working pretty good, it just happens at anytime.

Inside the laptop there is a connection from the laptop monitor to the motherboard. It might be loose.
