Avira - http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir- ... tag=button

I've been using it 3 years no and never had a virus since. It downloads new virus definitions every 4 hours.

I have been using Microsoft's free one since it was released and love it. It never ever interrupts what I am doing and auto updates along side Windows.

I use Avira on most of my systems. I also use Avast and MSE as free alternatives. For a secondary opinion, I use Malwarebytes.

I have an old computer that still uses XP. I use Microsoft's free antivirus on it and I haven't had any problems. It's a smooth integration and no hiccups, unlike some other free antivirus programs. The possibility of hiccups are great with them than with Microsoft's freebie.

Every computer I have to fix ends up with Avira on it. The problem is after the software updates itself there's a huge ad to buy the full version. Good news is there's an app out there to easily remove the ad.

Under "Security":

http://ninite.com/

Avast, AVG, Microsoft Essentials, plus some excellent ad-spy-malware removers. Consider that link a "best of freeware", and the installer is amazing.

comodo.com

Comodo Internet Security Suite. The free version is still very detailed and for the mid-techie and above (newbies may be a little daunted). It has a firewall, anti-malware (with sandbox feature), and anti-virus all rolled into one. Plus they have an option that lets you use their secure DNS servers instead of just the open ones so you get an extra layer of security from DNS poisonings. A whole lot of security for free!

Keep in mind though that nothing is fool-proof. If there is a fool behind the keyboard that clicks on links from emails and/or allows items to run that they aren't sure of even after a warning pops up then they will get infected eventually no matter what they are using.

Also McAfee has a free standalone scanner called the stinger (google for it) that is handy for additional checkups. I have used it on already infected machines to help dig out stubborn infections in tandem with malwarebytes.
