Region free that works?

Ok, so my girlfriend got a Laptop from dell that was supposed to be fully Japanese. Well, it turns out that the notebook doesn't have a region 2 drive but a region 1 drive. I've tried AnyDVD but I don't want to pay for the software since this should have been a region 2 drive in the first place. So we're calling Dell right now to see if there is anyway to force region 2 or make it region free.

From my experiance drives are set up so you can change the region 5 times, and the last time it stays.
