Windows help...again

OK so I fought with this for long enough and now I have just done a fresh install of windows on my other drive (storage) and made my old boot drive the new storage with all data still on it...it will run windows but I have a ton of corrupt files in Windows .......so is there an "easy" way to bring my data (internet favs, pics, documents, etc) over to the new boot drive or do I have to search for what I want and copy it over?

My 2 cents....

I always jsut file copy. I have used programs in the past to do it, but you end up having to select the directories you want to copy over anyway, so why not jsut select them and copy in one step rather than select them, then let a program copy them.

ok 1.5 cents :p

Part of my problem now is that my main documents folder won't let me in to copy anything out of it. I remember having this problem once before but the fix didn't work this time. I booted under safe mode to change the "owner" of the folder so that the access denied wouldn't come up. but it didnt work.

Had this very same issue with a co-workers XP home install, any PC I put his old drive in as slaved it wouldn't let me at the My Doc's folders.

I ended up puting the drive in a machine loaded up with Fedora 5 linux, mounted the XP drive and copyied the files to a usb key. You might beable to do it with a Knoppix live cd. if you dont have a linux distro installed some where.

if you go the fedora route, you will have to have to install the RPM for the kernal to mount NTFS drives.

can get the version that matches the fedora install here http://www.linux-ntfs.org/content/view/187/89/

once installed the line command would be

mount -t ntfs -o ro /dev/hda# /mnt/win

just swap out the # for the number of your drive and your set.

I have it mostly figured out now. I was going to use the XP tool "file and settings transfer wizzard" but my new boot drive isn't large enough to hold it so now I am needing a new hard drive. For right now I am just using the new drive without all the stuff from the original drive. When I need to get something from the old one I just power off and switch the ide cables thus switching which one is master. This will have to do for now.

My next question is this...what is the best way to guard against this type of software problem?? It seems every 6 months or so this happens to me. Would RAID of some type protect my Windows from corruption??
