so, at work, i got emailed file the i guess is from excel office 2007. the extension is .xlsx I cant open it for the life of me. Anyone know how to open it on non office 2007?

thanks, I tried that before i posted. I have just gone through and updated windows and all that good stuff. hopefully that fixes it.

yep, you need to install the update, once it's installed, it should work fine.

lets see, i have updated windows and then installed the converter thing...still not working. I have tried it on 2 computers - neither of them work.

I believe the xlsx files are ones that are encrypted with special Office Encryption. Tell your co-worker to resend you the file as a normal xls file

nope, xlsx is actually the normal excel file format. mmh, it should have worked. which office are you using to open the file? usually when you open the file, the office program will automatically detect the new extension and download the needed converter.

It maybe easiest if you just ask the sender to first save the file as office 2003 file system and then open it on your system.

I just tried those convertors yesterday and they worked for me. I saved a file in 2007 and then opened it up in 2003 on a different computer.

I get "Excel cannot open the file 'Conring Analysis.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the."

I have done all the windows updating. i have installed teh converter, again. I have Office excel 2003 (11.6355.6360) SP1.

I was able to get the file (the guy sent it differently... It just makes me mad that it doesnt work!!

try changing the extension to .xls - just for giggles. Sometimes I swap extensions and all of a sudden a program can view it.

I am lost at this point, other than to have the original sender send you another file using the 2003 extensions

did you try to update your office? the 2003 has sp2 update. Update your office to the latest version first.

it seems to me that maybe the original file is corrupted.

forgot about updating office...i will do and let you know.

PS i tryied changing the extensions also, didnt work.

Just changing the extension won't work, the new office format is XML based. On a side note, most files are half the size now.

Tell the person to save things in Compatibility Mode, that's what I have to do seeing as all the people I work with @ college have old crusty Office 2k3, if that Sometimes, you're so far ahead of the curve that you fall flat on your face

Don't know if oO is compatible with Office2007, but it opens every Excel file I've ever gotten, it's worth a try: openOffice
