Good cpu for Socket AM4 - AMD B350 MB Zen 2
Good cpu for Socket AM4 - AMD B350 MB Zen 2
I have been looking to see about upgrading the 1700 cpu in this motherboard to something that supports windows 11 and was wondering what people would suggest. I thought prices would have come down a bit but I guess due to everything they can blame on covid that wont happen any time soon. I may end up having to wait for a while anyway but figured I would ask and see what you all think.
My motherboard - https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard ... upport-cpu - to show what cpus work in it if you didnt know.
I would like something that can do video editing and cad/3dprinter programs decent but don't need the top end unless there is so small of a price difference that it makes sense. I would love the 3950X but that aint happening with those prices ;)
Also, what do you think about used cpus? I really hate buying used but if they are half price or lower it might be worth it. If they are priced like used video games where you save $5 there is just no point in my book.

Your 1700 being an 8 core CPU, I would really stick with another 8 core or 12. Just 2 generations newer 3700 or an X series!
I'm running a 3400G and I'm happy with it but, its only 6 cores!
With that said, my other PC is an AMD FX 9590 8 core but,
to be real I'd put the 3400G against the 9590 and I think the 3400 would do as good or better!
Upgrade to a 550 or 570 board(ASUS) and go with a 5600G and it would still be cheaper than a 3950 or 3900!
Also a new 550 or 570 board would allow you to use 2 M.2 SSDs, they are getting cheaper!
USED: I would consider it IF, you can see it run(local) or buy from Newegg or something that has some kind of a warranty!
On the open market I would not trust any CPU used! No telling what kind of hell its been through!
With all that said, give it a few months and the supply chain cost increases should be better but, no guarantee!
Right now Newegg has an ASUS 550 board(PCIe 4.0) list for $185 and the 5700G for $309, less than $500 together. Still less than a 3950!

Thanx! I also saw how an upgraded MB and CPU was the same or cheaper than just the CPU! Makes no damn sense!camaroguy1998 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 27, 2021 2:29 am Your 1700 being an 8 core CPU, I would really stick with another 8 core or 12. Just 2 generations newer 3700 or an X series!

I am in no hurry so I will keep an eye on how pricing goes as we swing into 2022. If they keep prices high, like I think most companies are going to try and do just to make even more profit, then I will just sit back and be content with what I got

as someone who fixes old cra.. equipment on the regular at work. The older tech gets (CPU/RAM) there is a break point where the price starts going back up. A lot. Looking at you LPRL DDR3.
as for the Win11 support, its not just the CPU. Its the Mobo too. It needs the TPM2.0, did a quick scroll and I didn't see it listed, so best to check that before you buy another CPU to find the board is not compatible as well. I mean is a 300 series, should be fine, but ya know, best to be safe lol.

I think for Windows 11 it is just TPM either on the MB or inside the CPU. I believe all the cpus after the series 1 amd have fTPM built in which works on windows 11. All of the cpus MS has listed have virtual TPM (I think) which makes it stupid to get rid of older cpus that can easily handle windows 11 since you can just buy a tpm header for the MB but from what I have read, that won't work....They make stuff so difficult!bubba wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 4:38 am as someone who fixes old cra.. equipment on the regular at work. Scalpers picked them all up as soon it was listed as a forced requirement. Then on some Asus boards it was different adaptors depending on what board, even revision mattered.

YES! It is insane. MS needs to remove the TPM requirement. Scalpers/bots are ruining everything online it seems

seeing the prices of the tpm modules since windows 11 needs them is insane. the module was around £3-£5 and now in excess of £20. thats insane. glad i have a system new enough to have native tpm 2.0 baked in

Re: Good cpu for Socket AM4 - AMD B350 MB Zen 2
Ok so just an update. Gigabyte released a new BIOS and I now have fTPM and it shows as valid for windows 11 except for the 1700 cpu still says not supported. I don't get that but hopefully they may change it at some point. I know I can do a fresh install of 11 to get around that but the update is so much nicer to be able to roll back if I don't like it. Oh well, baby steps

Re: Good cpu for Socket AM4 - AMD B350 MB Zen 2
I am definitely gonna wait it out. Windows 11 doesn't impress me much anyway, I just hate seeing I can't do something when my system is easily capable. It's like Microsoft teamed up with the CPU manufacturers and said "Let's get people to buy new stuff".....nahhhhhhh they wouldn't do that, would they?camaroguy1998 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:49 amWell that sucks!KnightRid wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:38 am Ok so just an update. I may try the registry hack to get it to update from the ISO. Downloading ISO now but it will take a few hours at my lovely speeds
Still up in the air about it. I want to try it just to see if it works but windows 11 just doesn't seem like a huge change from 10....we shall see.

LOL - No, I am a little leery about doing it with the reg hack and then not getting updates when needed. Still hoping they would include ALL processors that have TPM but it seems like the money grab is going to continue and make people buy new stuff they dont actually need.camaroguy1998 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 4:37 am
