Athlon x2 4200+ overclocking

Post by kichu_overclocked »

hi all,

i have an athlon x2 4200+ socket 939 cpu(toledo), i overclocked it on stock cooling to 2.72 GHz, other components are 2 6800xt in sli and 2gb ocz ram. I have attained stability, but strangely enough, despite the temperature hitting insane levels...89 degrees!!!! Like i said it is not crashing or anything after running 3d mark 2005 and even after playing fear for over an hour after maxing out the settings...Now, is it ok if i continue with this overclock...or will i get my cpu fried in a few days at this rate...guys plz help...

Running your Processor in 89c will only drag it so far, the Lifespan is already greatly reduced due to the excessive torturing you did to poor Processor  i am surprised it hasn't burned out yet, Toledo's are manufactured at 90nm they won't be cool if you OC them with a stock cooler. reduce the clocks to 2.2GHz (default) and reduce the VCore also (if you increased it) if you want to OC it, get a good cooler, like CM Hyper6+ for Rs.3,500/- hope this helps

Yeah, seriously will kill your processor soon running at that temp.

Seconded for sane over clocks on the stock cooler or get a better one.

hey thankx guys,
I lowered it to 2.5 GHz now n its runnig at 52 degrees....One more thing, i was running on an athlon 3200+ before, and i had overclocked it to 2.6 GHz on stock cooling....temp was at the max 52degrees....now wasnt that aslo a 90nm fabrication??? then why the toledos r overheating so much?

Also m curious as to why my processor hasnt burnt out yet!!!more over, how come its not switching off the system in between, or get stuck or something...i just dont get it!! m using it for about 3 months now!!!

thankx a lot guys for ur valuable input!!! :)

Because now you have a dual core processor its going to produce twice the heat of a single one :P

As to why it hasnt melted I would suspect there is some kind of thermal throttling that slows down the processor when it gets too hot (I know Intel do this, would have thought AMD do too), so when your processor is hitting 80/90 it slows down the clockspeed and stops it going up in smoke. This will prevent killing your CPU straight away, but the high operating temps will be no good for it long term!

Was your overclock Othros stable?

Wow, thats about confusing...I'll try decoding it:
Artic Silver 5 for the win and ThermalTake CPU cooling for the win?

Is that what you're getting at? Try using some whole words as not everyone knows what the hell you're talking about...sorry for the rant, no hard feelings :P

Thankx!
Havent tried that but will download n try;) and i have disabled cool n quite option....by the way upto what is a safe temperatue for these processors?

its pc3200 2-3-2-5 platinum edition.....it has a heat sink n all

well i understand that when my ram speed must match my buss speed...but this buss speed is slower than the cpu speed then how will it benefit from a fast cpu???? hehehe...i know m stupid....but a curious one eh!!

The ram speed doesn't need to match the bus speed (HT Link speed)
AMD CPU's connect to ALL outside parts of your PC via the HT Link (Hypertransport). This link is way faster than needed.
You can overclock the CPU and run the ram slower and still get performance. Try using a memory divider to try keep the memory stable.

There are 3 main parts to consider in overclocking AMD. The RAM speed, HT link speed and the cpu multiplier. The HT link should be above ~800MHz but not too high or things get unstable. You can manipulate this speed using the HT multiplier settings in the bios. The RAM speed should be on or above DDR400 speeds for best performance, regardless of the speed of the CPU.

True the faster the cpu is the more data it can process, so faster ram helps, but your forgetting that the cpu is by far the biggest bottleneck in your pc, so ddr400 is fast enough.

hey pal, thanx....i just read up on this stuff a day ago too...now things r a lil bit clearer, still one thing though, i dont have a cpu divider setting in my mb...all i have is htt multiplier, cpu multiplier, cpu frequency n then the voltage n ram settings...then how will i set the cpu multiplier?
my mobo is a8n-sli-premium
