If I was looking to OC a CPU to 3.0ghz+, to compete with an AMD 6000+, which would be the best cost efficient option, and what additional items would I want/need (upgraded heatsink, fan?)

ive gotten my 4200+ up to 2.95ghz before but it wasn't entirely stable and it was with an eliminator. Then again im using a budget nf570 board so on a 590 I bet you could get a 4200+ past 3ghz with an eliminator/freezone.

I can hit 2.8 Ghz with my 4200 with the stock cooler on a budget 570 motherboard as well.

From what I saw the X2 3600 with the Brisbane core is great chip for overcloking and very cheap too.

what are your temps and vcore?

also are you a 65nm brisbane or 90nm windsor?

if you did 2.8ghz at under 50c on a 90nm windsor then you have quite the sample there

90nm Windsor core.

From the notes I had taken a while back, I stopped at 2750 with a 1.4625Vcore and it idled at 39C, didn't write down load temp though, but it was around 55-60 I think.

Getting a Zalman 9700NT soon so I can see how far I can bring it

2.7Ghz on stock voltage for a X2 is insane, although he was using a better motherboard than what we have, but still..

Isn't yours at 2.8? If so, how much voltage do you need?

Btw, what I run 24/7 is 2.6Ghz (10x 260) with 1.4Vcore (I need to stop being lazy and try lowering it). Temperature difference between my 2 cores is ridiculous, up to 4C My heatsink is tight and flat, I might try lapping the processor eventually.

My S939 3800+ does 2.8 GHz with 1.3475 volts, prime stable for at least 24 hours.

Having trouble with 2.9 GHz, not sure if it's the cpu or the memory though, and having trouble figuring out, because no divider belowe 5/6 actually boots...

Nice chip you got there, but I think S939 do tend to overclock better. What motherboard are you using?

i've got a manchester 939 at 2.6 rock solid, never really tried much higher than that, but I think it's about its limit. I have a toledo that is at 2.6 and haven't tried at all but I bet I can get 2.7 or higher. Those are both 3800+ x2's however I don't have any AM2's to tell you about.

Good old DFI Ultra-D modded to SLI-D.

Playing some more, I think something with my ram is limiting me from getting 2.9 GHz stable, small FPU tests in prime go for at least 8 hours, anything using memory blows out in as little as 10 minutes.
No real ideas for fixing it though, I've been trying various ram settings for the past two weeks with no success.

My S939 3800+ Manchester was also limited to 2.6 GHz, with extra voltage, stock voltage only got it to 2.4.

I assume you tried looser timings, running them slower, etc?


Currently running 2706 Mhz (11x 246) at 1.45V, rock solid: 10+ hours ORTHOS.

All I need now is a little Vdimm mod on my mobo so I can put more than 1.95V on my modules so I can abuse them some more
