Athlon 6400+ review

Post by godling »

I probably caught up with it a bit too late, but I liked the review. It makes me wonder how the processor
would stack up against Intel's E6750 and E6700s?

With respect to that, I feel the review could have included some Intel processors from the same range
as well. That way decision making would be a bit easier for potential buyers/upgraders.

Just my personal opinion though.

I think you meant to comment in this thread.

But who knows, maybe there is a comparable Intel article in the works (provided that all the hardware is around and available to be tested.

Here's the 64 X2 6000+ reviewed.

I'd guess the 6400+ would be comparable to the E6750 in gaming, but if you do any media encoding etc. the Intel will blow it away.
Not to mention overclocking!

I guess not. That thread was concerned with the Athlon 6000+. I was talking about the review of the
Athlon 6400+ CPU. Not sure if I missed something though.

I do a lot of media encoding. Mostly audio composition and music scoring using Digital Audio Workstations,
and software products called "VST Plugins", some of which are CPU hogs. So from what I've gathered in
these forums, I believe an upgrade to the E6750 processor would make more sense than upgrading to an
Athlon 6400+.

Just a word of caution: I'm neither an AMD nor an Intel Fanboy, and I respect both equally. I'm not starting
another flame war here, but only gathering a few opinions to make a well informed purchase.

oops >_<

Thought that I had linked to a 6400 and not a 6000!

But yeah, you will get better performance from the intel, and then you have the option to overclock by a fair margin to leave amd completely in the dust.
At stock they might be pretty close in performance wise, but if you are willing to overclock, then you have to go intel.

Take the 6400+ number from here...

and insert it here...

or if you want a different benchmark - please note different versions on this one...

The 6400+ and E6750 seem close to the same when left at stock settings.

I run the 6400+ it's runs good for me, be aware that it doesn't come with a cpu cooler like most, it's also a 90nm cpu and runs hot hot hot, so you'll need a really good cooler to tame it, Zalman 9700, thermalright 120 ultra. That adds 50 to 70 to the cost of running one.

If you have the option the 6750 runs cooler, does better encoding etc. I'd hold out for an E8400 45nm over a 6750 65nm.
