AMD's 2010 - 2011 Processor Roadmaps

Today’s high end desktop platform is called Dragon. It’s what you get when you combine a Phenom II, AMD 790FX/GX chipset and a Radeon HD 4000 series graphics card. Nice, but that’s old news now. Next year the high end platform will be called Leo. It’s made up of a Thuban CPU, which is an updated Phenom II rev sporting as many as six cores. It’s still 45nm so don’t expect much in the way of new architectural features. Graphics comes courtesy of the Radeon HD 5000 series, which we all know and love. The chipset is going to be AMD’s new 8-series, complete with a new SB850 south bridge. In 2011 we get Bulldozer and it comes in the form of the Zambezi CPU (AMD’s codenames are such fun). You’ll see four and eight core versions of Zambezi. Both will support DDR3 and both will work in Socket-AM3. Obviously guaranteeing motherboard support this early in the game is difficult, but AMD is usually good about maintaining socket compatibility. You may be able to slip a Zambezi into your current day Socket-AM3 motherboards. All this plus a chipset and AMD’s 6000-series graphics makes up what’s going to be called the Scorpius platform.

Just read today that Intel will be giving AMD 1.25 BILLION as an out of court settlement.
For that price, Intel should have just bought AMD out right.

AMD just bought ATI for $5.4 billion a number of years ago... Don't think $1.25 billion would come close to buying AMD.

Yeah. And once intel is an even bigger monopoly, im sure they will offer low prices because they are all such nice people at intel. would be the best !

I agree too. AMD will be around for very very long time.

So with their new processors coming out, if I read correctly, they are still using the AM3 socket correct? I won't have to update my motherboard in the next few years because of a change to the processors if I want/need to upgrade out of the Dragon System that I'm currently running? I just put my new rig together, but it still hasn't shipped yet...reading more information makes me wonder if I should wait till after Q1 2010 to build and see what AMD pushs out after that time.

I say build it and wait till it's close to the end of 2010 to do any upgrades, buy then prices will come down.
It looks like they are keeping to the AM3 socket which is good.

I was a little worried about that with future-proofing my machine. Didn't want to find out that my motherboard was about to be put off here starting next year, ha! My wife would kill me if I tried to upgrade in the next year...she just doesn't understand haha. What exactly will more cores on the new processors offer us in the gaming community? More multi-tasking capability and faster processing overall with less reliance on the GPU? I'm still learning, but my brain is like a sponge right now for information on this stuff, hahaha

Unless some one comes out with a game that utilize all cores nothing as games utilize GPU more than a CPU, but with multitasking it will be faster and more efficient.
I would say that your rig is future proof for a good two year. I find that the Dragon set up runs smoother than my Intel set up I had 6 months ago, and the only upgrade I'm going to do is get ether a 5850 or a 5870.
I know how that gos with the wife I'm marred too.
