Post by Apoptosis »

Rumors are floating all over the web on the upcoming AMD FX60 processor.

Pricing:
FX-60 - $1031

Release:
Q1 2006

Do you guys think this will be the first Dual Core FX processor or are they going to keep it Single Core?

The FX line is going to stay single core. They have already said they are going to release an X2 5000+

You say that like you already know. Are you guessing or know it? Spill it.

I know nothing more than most..... but AMD has said on several occasions that the FX line would stay single core and be aimed at the high end gaming set.... while the AMD64 line would gradually shift to dual core.
Thinking about it logically, with the O/Cs that people are getting from the 4800, how hard would it be to simply bump those up and repackage them as X2 5000+s?
But who knows......AMD might just throw us a curveball.

Also the current FX57 runs @ 2.8? --> The next Dual core will be @ 2.6Ghz (1mb & 2mb chips)
As Capper said, AMD said the FX is for gamers etc. I can't see them releasing a new chip with a high freq. and dual core, when single core is all that market needs..

They will release a 3GHz single core ship and sell it for $$$$$.....

I think the FX60 will be dual core... if it was still going to be single core, then what happened to FX59?

Everyone (including AMD reps 3 months ago) uses the reason that the FX line is meant for gamers and today's games still run best on single core... if that is all that is running on the computer!

Tell me, do gamers do anything else on their computer when they are not gaming? I think most Gamers out there want a processor that can handle their gaming needs and can blow the sox of the competition after they are done gaming for the day.

I think the market is more than ready for an unlocked dual-core processor, and I think the early jump to the FX-6x line shows AMD realized this and is going to deliver.

My prediction:
FX-60:
Dual Core @ 2.8 GHz w/ 2x1MB cache and UNLOCKED multiplier.

X2 5000+:
Dual Core @ 2.6 GHz w/ 2x1MB cache

You are probably right.... but I think that would be a horrible waste on their part. how are you going to seperate pricing on something like that, especially considering the performance will not be very much different between the two CPUs.
I think AMD would be better served sticking with the FX line as a single core high end gamiong processor, and the AMD64 line rotating over to dual core....less confusion, better pricing for consumers, and a wider variety of choices.

I think it will be FX-59, Single Core, and 3.0Ghz
It only makes sense. Especially since it is still on s939. It would not be logical to release a new product under the same name. And I also can't see them calling it the FX-60 either. Maybe they will make a single core FX-59 at 3.0Ghz and an FX-60 Dual Core at 2.8Ghz with double cache?

Anandtech have details on M2 --> doesn't say if the next FX for 939 will be dual core though

I suspect the first dual core FX will be : Athlon 64 FX-62 Windsor M2 Q2'06 Athlon 64 FX-62 Windsor M2 Q2'06 = using the M2 socket!!!

alright guys, no need to break out the Claymores and bayonets....yet, lol. :axe:

I think it's quite possible it can go either way.....I would LIKE to see a dual-core FX-60 be made, especially at 3 GHz with 1MB*2 L2 cache, but AMD can very well trick all of us and pull something last-minute that will blow everyone's minds.....finances-permitting, I would buy one if it were of these specs, and keep a low thermal profile and low power usage.

of course I know something you don't. I just can't talk about it cause I'm under NDA, so I thought I'd see how "on the ball" our forum members are. Sadly no one is spot on for this one.

Well, if oyu know something, and it wasn't out of the ordinary, you probably wouldn't have posted the topic. So just by guessing I would have to say it will be dual core or else you wouldn't have posted the question. HAHA, too bad I suck at reverse psychology, so this is a very far stretch

lol, yeah.....it's just one of the things that comes with having something as large as this site eh Nate? I'm still looking around for info on that, but the only thing I've really found (and I posted it this morning after kenc brought it to my attention) was on the FX-62. What can I say, time makes slaves of us all, especially the college student with a full-time job, and I don't have the spelunking time I would like to. :|

if they are aiming at gamers dual core wont be worth it, it will be a waste of money on AMD's part and the end-user. Games dont benefit from dual core. Thats not to say you rip that "backup dvd" and play some HL2 or something. But for a standard gamer, waste of money. NO?

considering what the chip would run, yeah you're right on that one. Some people would actually do that though, or run F@H and game, or run a full-scale firewall and anti-virus and game at high frame rates, things like that would apply to me, however considering budget constraints, I would rather give $329 for a X2 3800+ and OC it to mad heights over WC than buy an FX chip (could get the Exos2 system with the chip, and all the blocks you need, and still come out a deal cheaper than the FX). I'm not going to try and play the guessing game, so I'll be doing some reading on it.

well the thing you can have a high clock and still have a slow proc. Its all in the Cache and Buss, that is why 64bit rox!! If i had the money i would soooooo be all over that fx-57 in a heartbeat. But for now i will take my free 3500. LOL

Has anyone heard or seen in action the anti virus thing in 64bit procs? It suppose to keep viruses from executing. I havent had one since i got my proc, but i dont know if it is form the proc or if its because i have been careful.
