Overclocking Opteron 165

Post by amdme127 »

I have a 430w thermaltake ps and overclocked to 2.7ghz with a bunch of other components including x700pro and 2gb ram, 3 hard drives and 4 optical drives etc, but the computer would turn on and take 20 seconds til it started to boot.
I am looking at a new ps and I was wondering if 600w would be enough???

Thanks guys

what do you mean the computer won't turn on and it take 20 sec till it started to boot? Do you mean that the system will take 20 seconds until you see the bios screen? If that's the case, it's possible that you oc a bit too high and system is checking to see if it can run at that speed.

600W should be enough for your setup but also check each rails and make sure you have strong enough 12v rail

My Opti system does something similar, it's almost like it's timing the drive spin-up's (even though staggered spin-up isn't an option and I don't have anything like your drive clutter). I've never seen a board take so long to POST.

What mobo are you using? Some BIOS have settings for HDD start delays. Does it beep when it POST's? Is the beep occuring prior to the delay?

It doesn't beep at all and it doesn't have the problem at default speeds.

I am cheap so I got a Asrock dual-vsta and they are meant for overclocking.

Do you have fast boot enabled or any hard drive checking options checked?

It sounds like it's hanging a little bit. A beefier PSU might help, as long as you don't skimp on it.

Dropping the overclock or loosening up your timings might help.

I think I need a new power supply.

I have too much running on a 430w thermaltake.

Leave the timings, just run it on ow divider and see if it boots any better. A 430w PSU may be enough depending on what hardware you are running. This could definitely cause problems if it is underpowered and hurt your chances of a really good OC.

It is definetly under powered because I run just about every piece of hardware that can fit in it.

I have had one of those 430 watt psu's and was not very impressed. I would deff get at least a 500w (and a good one). I have a OCZ 600w and have been very pleased. That is what is in the computer in my sig.... :)

I just got a xion 600w psu and silent almost and works like a beast with a 130mm fan. I got it for over $50 off, and it works amazing and I have already started to overclock and have noticed improvements.
