EVH build

Post by Alathald »

I'm going to take my time with this one so bare with me but my rad finally came in I decided to go ahead and get started on my build even though all I have so far is my case and rad. The name may not make sense yet but it'll become apparent rather soon (this weekend I hope).

Here's a few pics of the case when I first got it:
ImageImageImage

And my rad unboxed (its a Feser triple rad  )
Image

Sizing up if the rad will fit (looks awfully close...)

After a bit of surgery on my case, the moment of truth:
Image

How close was I cutting it? Maybe a bit too close for comfort but meh, it fits:
Image

Well that's really it for now, hopefully I'll get some more done over the weekend...my cat really seems to be enjoying all the new boxes I've gotten for her though...

How much have you had to cut out so far?

This is going to be one hell of a nice and compact watercooled case

The top fits on and doesn't really rub the bleed-valve or anything so I think it should work OK. I haven't really done much cutting, only that cross-brace you can see in the second picture and the tabs that hold the CD drives and the back of my hand...that last one wasn't really part of the plan though :finga:

I'm hoping to get it properly mounted and get started on a custom faceplate this weekend though so stay tuned!

Well I finally got a chance to do some more work on my case the past couple days, it's still nowhere near complete but I've got the rad in properly and the first color of paint applied...it's starting to look pretty good imo.

Alright, first up we have the marking off initial cuts for the rad placement and the results of those initial cuts:
ImageImageImage

After a bit of cleaning up:
Image

Some more pics of just how tight a fit it is...I just barely fit it behind the tab for that foot, thought I'd have to remove it and the fillport has a VERY tight clearance:
ImageImageImage

----------------------------------------------------

Alrighty then, onward to paint! (yes I know I haven't finished the face but I can multitask) :finga:

Masking off my design was the most stressful part because I really didn't want to botch it up:
ImageImage

After that I set up a ghetto paint booth in the garage and hung my panels, here's two of them after the first coat:
Image

Then came a couple very long hours waiting for the paint to dry...I had one small area where the paint pooled (don't trip while spraying 8-[ ) that I plan on fixing tomorrow. I was pretty anxious removing the tape but it came off pretty clean. Here it is all put back together:
ImageImage

That's pretty much it for now, stay tuned though cause I've still got to make the faceplate and finish the paint...that doesn't include the actual (re)build with w/c components either (which I still haven't ordered #-o )
Oh and if you haven't figured out the reasoning behind the name yet then you're hopeless :finga:

lol, if only that case was an Antec Solo, it would really make that punny

I play but nowhere near Eddy; my favourite guitarist is actually Randy Rhodes but I didn't think polka dots would have worked as well. TBH, I only recently picked my guitar back up (haven't played it in a couple years). Been using this site to relearn the basics and been learning "Little Wing" to get the technical chops back up :supz:

OK, I've put together a preliminary list of the parts I still need and I am submitting it for review  Aaanyway, just looking for ideas/recommendations, this is my first venture into watercooling afterall... :prayer:

$55 - MCP350 Pump
$20 - XSPC Pumptop
$40 - Swiftech Apogee GT
$35 - Swiftech MCW60 VGA
7x$1.85 - 7/16" Tygon UV-Black
$1 - 1/2" T-Line
4x$5 - Swiftech Hi Flow Barbs 1/2"
$5 - Generic Screw Clamps
$12.50 - VGA RAM Heatsink
Plus my TFC Rad that I already have

I'll also be needing a slim dvd drive so I've decided on this one because its a slotloader.

Comments/suggestions are welcome and encouraged. :)

I've looked at both of those items previously and decided on the 350 with XSPC top because the 350 pump is quieter and should be more than enough with the high flow blocks I picked. As for the top, it's the only true spiral volute design I could find and, according to martinsliquidlab, it also outperforms the Petras top. Not to mention the Petras is IMPOSSIBLE to find in stock...

On a side note, I just got back in from spraying my red coat so expect more pictures tonight

I'd love to but have you seen how little room I have in this case as it is? :finga:

I'm pretty well set on that pump+top atm though, so any better suggestions on the CPU/VGA block or the barbs? I haven't really done as much research on those as I have everything else...only part I'm not at least 70% sure about is the dvd drive but it was all they had at Newegg and I haven't had time to look elsewhere.

Alright new updates!

I got the run I mentioned above sanded out then got my case masked and painted this morning...then I waited around all day for it to dry

Anyway, I would have also gotten the faceplate done today but I ran out of dremel wheels so I'll just quietly leave that out of this update...

Now for pictures!

This is the initial masking job, I spent over an hour on this making sure I had everything right...it's really hard to visualize the finished product when you're covering what will be visible and leaving exposed what will be covered:
ImageImage

I then hung the panels for paint (first pic) sprayed my first coat (second pic) and left them to dry (third pic)
ImageImageImage

Now, for the moment of truth, unmasking the case:
ImageImage

I'm happy with the way it turned out...what do you guys think?

I think it looks pretty swish! ;)

I wasn't too sure about how this would work out on a case (it being much bigger than a guitar) but you've done a great job and it looks awesome

I'm impressed with how quickly you've gotten this all done too! It would have taken me weeks!

Can't wait to see it finished.
