Update: I wrote a little article on my experiences while modding this drive. Check it out!

Well, a couple days ago, I took my chances and followed the instructions to flash my Sony DW-U18A DVD burner to become a Lite-On 832s Dual Layer burner... at least theoretically, because I have not tested the Dual Layer part yet.

I followed the instructions from this thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=102104

However, what is holding me up is the current price of DL media... According to newegg, one DL disc is $12! my main question to all of you is where can I get the best bargain for DL media?

Cheap Dual Layer is not here........YET.
The factories are currently ramping up.
One problem is DL discs are a complex 9-11 layer sandwich that must be nearly perfect to work. however once several companies get in to full production, DL discs price will plumet just as cdr, cdrw, DVDR and DVRW did before it.

You really believe you can compete with the Chinese and Russian mafia? Even if you got the discs free (and a get out of jail free card, you couldn't do the volume needed

I just tried this with the version we get in aus. Everything was the same as yours (except a white front) and it fooked my burner, can't boot into windows to reflash with original bios either. :(

Did you pay close attention to this section of the article?
To determine if this mod will work for your DW-U18A

As far as we know, this mod will only work for Revision 1 models of this burner, which has the gear-driven tray. Revision 2 has a belt-driven tray and has not been tested. To tell if you have revision 1 of the DW-U18A, open LtnFW (see below on where to download it) and look to see if the current firmware version of your drive is UYS1. If it is, then you have Rev. 1 of this drive and may continue. If it says UFS1, then you have the belt-driven tray and these instructions are not known to work for that drive.

this worked great on my sony DW-U18A 8x burner, i was having trouble applying the firmware as i was running the tools from the zip files, so i then extracted all the tools and .bin files and tried again and it worked.

Even though this is an old guide, it stil works perfectly and DVD+R DL are now in production.

Thanks.
