Ultra X2 550w PSU good enough for my rig?

Post by BamBoozleD »

Hi, I am waiting for my new PSU to arrive. In the mean time, I wanted to know if anyone has experience with this PSU and is it enough for my rig. Wondering if my purchase was worth it, and I am on a budget.
Current Rig:
K9N SLI Platinum
AMD X2 4200+
2xPNY 1GB PC5300
2xXFX 7600gt Extreme Edition SLi
X-Fi Extreme Gamer
1xWD Sata2 160gb
1xFloppy
1xDVDR/RW
USB keyboar/mouse
Centurion 5 (Case) w/ Thermaltake 430w PSU
1x120mm/1x80mm/1xSpot Fan All Antec and w/ 3 speed settings all set to LOW.

Planning to add one more Spot Cool fan and one more sata2 drive for raid. maybe one more optical.

great retailers, I order from them all the time. Mainly because the have 2 day shipping for an extra 2$.

I would return the PSU. I mean it'll work, but not if your ocing, and its not the highest quality. For 110$ I think I can work my magic.

Good 100$ Antec 550W http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... ode=273506

Better 109$ OCZ 600W

Also if you want to see how much power you need go here. It calculates high, but it works

dicecca, in your new PSU guide you say to avoid Ultras except X2 and X-Finity.

The topic title says he's buying and X2, and I don't see anything that says otherwise. Aren't you contradicting yourself?
AMD Opteron 1224SE "Santa Ana" = DFI Lanparty UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G
Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2 800 = Corsair CMPSU-750TX
Sapphire 4870 1GB = Sceptre X20WG-Naga 20" = Logitech X-530 5.1
Seagate 320GB (SATA II) x2 = Samsung SH-S203B (SATA)

no actually I'm not. That guide isn't finished yet. What will eventually be there is that those PSUs are good for none overclocking. But I still don't like them. Cheap construction. Modular PSUs really aren't that good to begin with. While the X2 and X-finity are better quality than previous builds they are still crap. They can't hold a candle to even an Antec or that OCZ.

My +12V rails right now using my current PSU(Thermaltake low-end 430w) actually rarely hits 11.95v on full load. This is with cpu FSB bumped up to 218 which brings my core speed to 2400stable. Now other q is. Will this be okay(Ultra X2) as far as maybe adding one more Sata drive for raid and with slight OC. My PC is considered low-end SLI, from SLIzone. And they require only 400-450w. I just wanted a slight head room when adding more drives. You are right about the OCZ psu being a better deal, and somehow I did not see that while I was shopping. One other thign is it would suck to have to return this and wait till it gets processed and have to wait longer to get another PSU. Thanks for your help though dicecca112. If after testing the x2 and it doesnt top my current psu then I surely will return it for another one. So far reviews, including yours, say its not half bad.

if your testing your PSU with software, guess what its wrong. Guaranteed. MY software says my 12V rail is 9.53 and my voltmeter saws it nevers drops below 12V. Whereas the X2 may not be bad, I'm not a fan of a company that had a reputation of its PSUs exploding. You screw up once, your done in my book. Hence why I won't be Enermax anymore, I had one die within 2 weeks on me.

Well thanks for clarifying, dicey. :P

And BamBoozleD, Dicecca is right, Ultras are generally crap. (Which is why I was checking up on him! )

You'd be very much more suited sending it back and getting the OCZ. The chances of killing system components just isn't worth not wanting to wait. Get a better one, if that one does fail, it'll probably be very painful.

This article shows 8 common power supplies in a nice round-up and is worth a read. This article looks at how PSU's are priced and what to look for when buying a new one.
