What's the benefit, if theres one, of having a fourth pin on the fan connector?

Also, I'm looking at those two Thermaltake fans:

/*Edit
Forget about this, just noticed the standard fan isn't simply the no LED version and is alot more noisy. http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/product/D ... /a2368.asp#
is the no-LED version.
*/

Which are basically the same but the LED uses 4 pins while the standard one only uses 3 pins, is it only because the LED needs the extra ~2V and few mA to run?

/*
But this question remains...
*/

And if I get those, can I use some sort of fan controller like the Zalman MFC1/2 to adjust their speed?

Thanks in advance!

If I'm seeing the picture in your links correctly the 4 pin is just a molex connector where as the 3 pin will connect to your mobo.
