ok so my friend told me to lap my e6850 to get better temps but wat i want to ask is how does lapping work? and is there a benefit of doing so?

Lapping reduces the tiny pits on the top of a processor, and the bottom of a heatsink. It provides better contact between the heatsink and processor via the thermal compound.

To lap, you use very fine sandpaper to basically polish the processor and heatsink. Some can be polished to an almost mirror shine.

This can damage both items, so beware.

Actually, depending upon the heatsink you should not lap it but lapping the IHS on top of the CPU can almost always help with heat transfer. Some heatsinks are designed to be slightly bowed outward and if you lap it you could possibly reduce the effectiveness of it.

Just think twice before lapping the heatsink...actually before lapping anything because this will void your warranty.

As for the actual lapping itself, we have an awesome guide by our resident Englishman, dmb2000uk [link]

Personaly i don,t see why you would wanna risk damaging the cpu for a small reduction in temps :? Maybe as a last resort, but first i would improve the airflow in the case.

Well you obviously aren't (yet) a temperature junkie. Get out while you're still clean!!!
