Backplate installation questions

Ok, just got some hsf's to beta test and installed the first one just a bit ago. This backplate was a frickin BEAR to get on! I was pushing that hard it seemed like i was going to break through the MB just to get the nuts started! I could not put a rubber or hard plastic piece between the back bracket and the nut because there was not enough screw poking through the hole.
My question - has anyone else run into this? I remember old backplates that were easy to install, nothing like this thing! It seems this X shaped backplate is standard for Intel cpus now a days, i just hope they all are not this difficult to get in!
Am I missing an easy way to do this (other than bringing up a c-clamp from my toolbox ;) )? Are those spacer pieces important, since the x bracket has a shield on the one side to protect the MB?
Mike
argh - and I have to do this again to test the other one..lol. I was going to test them on 2 different setups, but I dunno now.
