PS tests good but wont work in the computer

Post by KnightRid »

This is just weird. I have a Hiper 580w PS that i was using in my living room pc that i just put the blu-ray drive in. Yesterday I noticed it was off and would not come back on. I pulled out my handy dandy PS tester (PS-124) and it tests fine. I put a 400W cheapo PS into the computer and everything boots up and has been running since yesterday, so I dont believe anything is wrong with the computer itself.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? I have a year and a half left on the 3 year warranty, but with the PS testing good on the tester, I dont know if I should try an RMA or not.

I might try and put it back into the computer today, just to see if it would work all of a sudden (stranger things have happened).

Will it fire up the PSU with the paper clip trick? Might be a problem with the ATX turn on header on the power supply.

But then the tester should not start the PS either, should it?

I have no clue what the paperclip trick is either. :?

Does your tester give actual voltage readings or just green (etc) lights?

Might want to pull out a DMM and double check the voltages while the PSU tester is active, and probably check the other lines that the PSU tester doesn't (like the other 12v rails, and the -12v rail).

You take a paperclip and short the green lead to any of the black leads on the power supply. This tricks it into thinking it's recieved the power up command from the motherboard.
