Right at the end of benchmarking the Intel Core i7-980X power supply our Cooler Master UCP 1100W Power Supply started to make a high pitch whine while it is running. If you hit or press on the case the noise gets quieter... Almost sounds like a capacitor is about ready to take off!! I don't think it's a fan bearing or anything like that. It's a super high pitch noise and is annoying as you can hear...
Anyone ever heard a PSU do this before?

something rubbing on the fan hub? pull the cover off and fire it up see if it still whines.

Nothing looks like it's rubbing and removing the cover breaks the warranty sticker...bubba wrote:something rubbing on the fan hub? pull the cover off and fire it up see if it still whines.

That's a cap, one of the guys in work is gun shy when working on servers because he heard that and then PSU exploded.

Re: Cooler Master 1100W Power Supply High Pitch Noise
Just wondering, how old is the power supply? Seems I can't find any Corsair hx850 ps.. Everyone is out of stock. Anyone no whats the issue. Maybe they are going to come out with a hx900ps.
Edit: That sound is not fun to listen to. Sounds like the bearings need some grease. Whatever is causing it, doesn't really matter. Can't use the thing making noise like that. I won't buy cooler master power supplies after hearing that.
