Is thier anyway to convert this cable (below)

into a plain old serial cable (below) ?

I only want this down so i can mount this on my lid of my custom case. (below)

Sorry about the photo dont have a tripod for the camera and i dont have steady hands too.

i think it will look pretty cool if i can attach that to the lid of my case and then jsut use that as my monitor

Nice idea, shame you haven't got a desktop monitor to use.

Just checked around the net and it seems it is only possible with a LCD controller board that will plug that cable in and convert it to a VGA connector output.

They seem to be rare/fairly expensive so its up to you if you think its worth it.

Yea well bugger, i was reading somthing on wiki that they could just cut the cables open and connect the wires. Im pretty good with a soldering iron so if it can be done i would give it a try

There are a few rare panels that can accept straight input from the pc, so try looking up its part number and see what you can dig up...

not sure really. either google your laptop to see if its on the interwebs somewhere or take the plastic shell off carefully and see if theres a sticker with it on?

What do you mean by this?

and were abouts in Australia can i get a "LCD controller board" i searched http://www.Ebay.com.au and got nothing

I was curious to see if there was an easy solution to your problem. And it appears it would be easier to save up for a 108" LCD from Sharp then to get a laptop monitor going.

I'm curious, do you still have the laptop? What's wrong with it? Have you thought about selling the LCD? There's probably someone out there that would want it. I use to do tech support and came across people who were shocked to find we'd charge hundreds to replace their out of warrenty panel.

I looked around all over using the sharp panel model number, and kept ending up with replacement pages for the panel itself. I don't know if a generic controller exists, perhaps with the laptop model number would pinpoint a site with the guts you need (LCD controller + Power transformers?).

Alternatively say screw it, try to auction the panel for $100- $200. That same model number is offered online as refurb at $177, new-ish $300. Then take the bones you get and buy a cheap LCD monitor and gut it.

Also you noted you took the laptop apart when it stopped working. Where is the rest of the laptop (with the parts you now need)?

Well the laptop was a Toshiba Satellite 2040 as the program EVERest told me.
When the laptop keyboard stopped working i took it apart and decided id try and follow the cable around (it went from the keyboard under a metal panel) and see if i could get to the end. I did get to the end with a fair load of gentle persuasion which ended up snapping all the pins that held it together. After that i did the right thing took out the cpu ram hd and the DVD burner and gave them away to some of my dads mates who needed the parts and the rest is probably either been shipped to Asia or recycled.

If i was to put it on eBay should i put it on teh American ebay site of the Australian one? i've never sold anything on ebay before so i dont really know how to do it.

Sorry, I didn't get an email telling me that someone replied to this thread...

What I meant by using a desktop monitor, is that it would be easier to gut a regular LCD monitor (i.e. not a laptop one) as that would have all the connections that you would need to get it working in your PC already.

You should put it on the ebay AUS site, unless you are willing to organise shipping to the US (even then use the AUS site and select the US as a shipping destination).
