Hehe...
Isn't this a great news for all of those Intel fans out there?! like myself
But who knows AMD has really some superfast processors, as reply to Intel CPUs.....
Just hope they won't cost a fortune...
Any comments on this topic are welcome
brajko2, I'm really glad you posted this!... I read this article last night... it came as a big shocker...
I knew Conroe was going to be huge... just didn't expect it to be this huge!
**Before reading my soapbox, I want to let you all know I don't specifically favor one company over the other... I'm just all about market competition for lower prices... and AMD is still the underdog when it comes to market-share.**
I'm going to have to get on a little soapbox for a little bit...
I'll start off by stating I really feel bad for AMD on this... I mean, when looking back, AMD has been paving the road for Intel for the last two years. Think about who started a bunch of key features now on today's desktop computers: 64-bit on desktops -> AMD, Dual-core on desktops -> AMD, Lower-power consumption compared to competition -> AMD, Higher performance per Mhz than competition -> AMD.
Aside from having so much more market-share than AMD, Intel has been playing catch-up as far as performance and features go for at least the last two years. And I think with Conroe, Intel is putting the final two nails in AMD's coffin... power consumption and performance.
Like Anand stated in his article, I do not think AMD has a chance of gaining back the 20-40% performance difference with Socket AM-2 and DDR2... Intel had to bring the Pentium M architecture back to the desktop to pull off Conroe... AMD would have to start from scratch.
Well, I'm off the soapbox now... And after saying all of this... I also must state that I could be way off... the systems Anand got his hands on could have been rigged... But even if it turns out to only be a 10-15% increase in performance with Conroe, AMD will have a state-of-emergency to attend to.
Anyone else have comments on this topic to share? Agree or disagree with Anand or me?

Same here. Now if I could find out if Asus will be able to support the Conroe on their 975 chipset workstation board. Then I could finally drop another rig from my home usage.

I think Intel were the pioneers of bit&chips......AMD came back but now intel are showing their true form yet again.....
Intel made a BIG mistake using a long pipeline and trying to reach 4GHz...
They invested too much money and resources into the netburst architecture, what they did was make the best chips they could with that tech.......It did hurt them bad, but nowhere as bad as it would have hurt AMD if they done the same........
The fact that Intel could still "only" make a profit of 9.7Billion last year is a credit to them...............people may chime in stating that's just because Intel have a monopoly.....i say their monopoly is just a credit to them and what they have done in the industry over the years.........
I think it's only right that Intel strike back and strike hard!!!!! If thy didn't then I'd say they were complacent!!!
I love the technology not the brand!!!!!!
I hope Conroe IS as fast as Anands reports.....It will only force AMD to make something better.......AMD are in parnership with IBM @ the moment for server technology.....this I HOPE will bring some real improvements over the next 18mths........BUT I will switch back to Intel by this time next year if nothing improves!!!!!
sp1nfer wrote:remember not to get too excited over this. There's still 6 months ahead and I'm sure AMD won't stand still for that time.
Anyway, the numbers are impressive. No kidding
What do AMD have in response to this???? THey have already admitted that their is NO real changes to their newer chips!!! Yes they will use DDR2.....but AMD64 doesn't need more memory bandwith! Yes they will bring in new tech, virtualisation and security features???? So what.....Intel have that with their current chips.....and that tech won't bring more realworld performance!!!!
I'd say they will hit 3GHz and more......but a 400MHz bump won't be enough!!! Intel will release their new chips @ ~2.6GHz.....but i'm sure they have ALOT more in reserve!!! Intel will be using 45nm tech while AMD are still on 65mn and they admint they haven't the facilities to switch to 45nm untill next year!!!! --> but credit does go to AMD for getting more out of the 65nm tech than Intel did!!!!!!!

2006 is going to end nicely
You forgot one

I truly hope that Microsoft keeps that miserable "feature" turned off and will continue to allow the user of the license to keep it turned off.
Now that I have the X1800XT on order I believe my NLE machine should be able to handle Vista extremely well.

The AMD system could be better configured by using a RD580 based motherboard instead of a RD480 platform, but other than that there's not much else that can be done to improve the performance of the system Intel used. Obviously we're not going to rely on these initial benchmarks for our final take on Conroe, but the scores are extremely interesting to say the least................................................................On the Intel front, there is a lot of time for performance optimization with regards to Conroe and its platforms. It’s also worth noting that the 2.66GHz E6700 we previewed here is simply a high end mainstream part, it is not an Extreme Edition flavor of Conroe. At 2.8 or 3.0GHz, a Conroe EE would offer even stronger performance than what we’ve seen here
I'm going to haveto start saving.......dang "Electronics Envy" ;)
