DX10 Hacked For All OSes?

Post by DMB2000uk »

MICROSOFT HAS BEEN talking about DirectX 10 being an integral part of Vista, saying that DirectX 10 could not be implemented onto any other operating systems. The reason for this is the approach of DirectX 10 inside the Vista kernel, with a more console-style approach to hardware.

However, that was before the Alky Project came to light limelight.

The Inq is wondering if this is a hoax. If it isn't then its good news for us all.

I'll believe it when I see. Allbeit I don't doubt the abilities of programmers and I know little to none about this topic, I can't see why its not possible

Because I simply do not know, but would a 7800GS be capable of running DX10?
Don't ask me, cause I know nothing! I'm lost in this world of technology and am barely holding my head above water. Thank the Good Lord for LR, otherwise I would have drowned years ago.

It seems I read somewhere about the time Vista was hitting the market that DX10 was in XP's future!
I'll try and see if I can find it again.

He does say on his site that the older cards would run it, but is not specific in telling if the actual effects would be present, i assume not. This is more like a wrapper that they have for linux to run windows games. Just running the game through a low level API layer to get the game to think it's dx10.

I wouldnt have hopes on it.. i mean its a great idea.. but how fast?http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/2007...is-blog-i.html
...These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it...
Found a post somewhere of someone pointing this out..
the comment was "good luck getting higher than 2fps in games like crysis"

Honestly it will depend on how efficient the layer is at breaking it down to machine code. if it's very good, you could probably get 2/3 of the normal efficiency. I can't imagine they would pursue it if this weren't possible or better.

I think this will if funds permit being along the lines of the wrappers used by linux to play win games only much better from what I have read. If it works like it is supposed to it could be a big benefit to those of us without vista.

If performance is good enough it might put a huge dent in Vista

It won't really dent vista as every new pc will ship with it so it's only a matter of time till they hit max market penetration on that front.

Thats true and the average consumer wont switch from Vista to Linux just because of DX10, most average users dont know or care what DX10 does what they do care about is ease of use and stability. Linux is more stable then Windows now if someone could make a distro of Linux thats easier to use than Windows and had DX10 support for games then look out.

I think it would be better, easier and more feature rich if they actually went to open GL

I run Vista 32 and 64bits, but primarily use the 64 for gaming. I use the 7800GS and wow, the DX10 works. That's strange cuz the post below yours says NO...Hmmmm...Maybe my version of Vista is special cuz MOH:Airborne works great.

It doesn't play those games with DX10 effects though! The games are defaulting back to the DX9 code path on your PC!

The fact is it's physically impossible for a 7 series card to produce DX 10 effects as it doesn't possess the right architecture to use dx 10 code. I am sure the Ageia card makes for some nice physics based video, but asside from that, your definitely not seeing any dx10. Would be nice if Carmack made a Gaming Linux distro and made games for it. He could give it away free with the game.
