July 2008 Forum Drawing - ATI Radeon HD 4850 Graphics Card

This month we are giving away an RV770 thanks to our friends up North at ATI. That would be the Radeon HD 4850 for those of you that don't keep up with all the code names. This is the new mainstream price versus value GPU winner from ATI and retails for $199. Our article showed that this card is fast, so this should be a great contest for our small community!

ATI has a question they want answered and all you have to do to enter this contest is to post a reply with the answer to this question:

“Ruby's finding it hard to keep up with all her workload, so ATI has dispatched another agent to work alongside with her, sort of like a partner. Create your idea as to what you think her partner would look like and give him/her a name! What are his/her special skills? What kinds of missions would he or she be helpful with?”

RULES:
1) This contest is open to active forum members with a valid shipping address.
2) The winner will be shipped his/her prize as soon as possible (if being shipped internationally (Canada for example) it could take 4-8 weeks by USPS)
3) To enter you must answer the question and post once to this thread.
4) Depending on your location and how fast ATI sends out the card determines when you will get it. That means it could take 4-8 week or maybe even longer to reach you. Since we don't physically have the case we can't change shipping companies or tell you when it will exactly arrive or ship.
7) The contest ends July 15th, 2008 at midnight with the winner being drawn the following day.

Doublecross" introduces the near future world of ATI's "Ruby" and her arch enemy "Optico". In an action packed 1 minute and 40 seconds, Ruby has to outwit the cunning "Optico" as he attempts to cheat on an exchange. Ruby not only has to use her wits but battle Optico's Ninja henchmen. Culminating in an explosive ending, Ruby escapes, leaving Optico vowing revenge.

Through the use of motion captured animation, depth-of-field, realistic image based lighting and dynamic shadows; "DoubleCross" borrows heavily from both gaming and movie genres to create a compelling demo that further raises the expectations for real-time graphics.

Ruby's latest adventure takes place in a rugged, mountainous terrain where her skills as a snowboarder are tested and may just save her life. This fast paced, action packed demo exploits the power of the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT to create a rich and expansive landscape of snow, rock, and ice. From the procedural snow accumulation on the harsh terrain to the wrinkles on Ruby's brow and the physics that drive each strand of fur on Ruby's fur collar, the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT can handle it all.

In order to create an expressive, compelling character our artists constructed 128 morph targets to drive Ruby's facial rig. All of these facial "poses" are combined using the GPU to create Ruby's final look. Ruby also uses a number of animated wrinkle maps to add additional subtle expressiveness to her brow, eyes, mouth and chin. High dynamic range imaging techniques are used through out the Whiteout demo to account for the brightest of outdoor environments as well as the darkest depths of Ruby's icy head quarters. Advanced light scattering techniques are employed to faithfully reproduce the complex interactions of light with snow and ice.

Ruby's partner could be a Japanese girl who has a lean and cut build. Her name is Moka and she's very pretty, having long, pink hair. She's trained all around and knows many different fighting styles such as taijutsu. Moka is like a ninja. She can conceal her presence very well and will act only when the timing is right. She can also kill a person without the person being murdered knowing what hit them. Moka would be helpful in doing many different missions, ranging from assassinating someone to protecting someone important to just helping a friend out when they are in need of help. However, whatever the mission is, she'll use the best of her skills to successfully complete the mission in the shortest time and most efficient way.

Double Edit: If I come up with anything new, I'll edit this post. I'm gonna try and make what I believe would be the perfect partner for Ruby

ok, im thinking a guy named perl. (intentionally misspelled) hed be like that guy in live free or die hard from the mac commercials, a computer nerd kinda guy, but unlike that guy hed also be tough at the same time, but not to tough. hed help with the tech side of stuff, and with gadgets and weapons and stuff. hed be wearing red aswell to keep up with the whole ati theme, but he wont be as skimpily dressed, but thats not to say his clothes wont be tight he is a super hero after all. hed be helpfull on anykind of mission where stealth and secrecy are required, as well as missions where you just go in and blow everything all to hell, because he has gadgets to fit anykind of role.
thats the kind of thing your looking for in an entry right?

Ruby's new partner fidgeted anxiously in his seat, waiting for his new mentor to arrive. He had waited a very long time to finally meet the legendary warrior. Many dream-filled nights had been spent within a dojo in the mountains, crossing Hanzos with the leather-clad beauty. Or in the field on dangerous missions where lives were on the line. Every awakening was met with a flood of disappointment upon realization of where he was, and the fact that he was precisely where Ruby wasn't. He reinforced his great personal commitment on a daily basis, to become worthy of her partnership and trust. His devotion and passion eventually granted him the permission of Ruby's superiors to actually meet her for an interview, but questions still plagued his mind. Did he train hard enough? Did he emphasize to the agents just how much he idolized Ruby? Did he remember to put on deodorant this morni...

Wait! Someone is coming! Could it be? Yes, it is Ruby! Shes walking into the room!

Palms sweating, heart pounding, he immediately jumps to attention and assumes a military-like salute and launches his memorized pledge.

"Commander Ruby, prospective agent X1 reporting for training! Stand by for my pledge of allegiance to you and your cause!"

Nerves frazzled, he completely forgets to wait for her reply before continuing his oath.

"I pledge to serve you and your superiors with the utmost commitment and loyalty! I pledge to devote all of my PC-related skills to your cause! These skills include a rudimentary knowledge of ASCII code, pseudo-code, Java, and the ability to create images using nothing but text characters! These skills will allow me to supplement our cause in useful and creative ways, such as maintaining a website with a counter at the bottom that will update as we complete missions. Hypothesizing and diagramming programs that could possibly help us thwart our enemies. Demoralizing our foes by leaving cryptic and insulting binary messages written on the walls of their so called 'secure' head-quarters. Coming up with creative and charming new ways to cook Top-Ramen meals to repair our battle damaged bodies. Ruby, these skills I give to you to use and or abuse at your discretion!"

He was visibly shaking at this point. It was impossible not to notice Ruby's raised eyebrows and not-so-subtle glances at the one way mirror window, where her superiors were observing her interview with the prospective agent. He knew that the longer he waited, the greater were the chances that his voice would fail him. Cutting off Ruby right as she was opening her mouth to speak, he continued.

"I pledge to train body and mind, to become an efficient killing machine such as yourself! You need not worry, I do not believe in the way of the Sith, where aspiring apprentices dispatch and take the place of their masters. I will be your servant and friend forever, ready to kill or be killed for you at any time! I pledge to try and lose approximately 30-50 lbs, or at least until I can fit into a red leather outfit fitting for an agent of your caliber! I pledge to actually call and try ProActive for 30 days with a no risk, money back guarantee next time I see the infomercial! I pledge to wear more fashionable clothes when not in battle fatigues, something of comparable quality to clothing found at JcPenny or Sears! I pledge to make my presence nothing more than a facet to magnify your beauty and power! I pledge to choose an agent code name worthy of your gemstone title, one to complement and complete our destined duo of power!"

Sweating with the passion of his monologue, he fails to notice Ruby urgently whispering into her comlink, no doubt to her superiors about their selection. With one final breath and pant adjustment, he mentally recalls his name choice. Yes, his geography 101 course had served him well, giving him a wealth of powerful gemstone names to choose from. How could she refuse when she hears the name? He closes his eyes, flexes his long-dormant muscles, and focuses all his faculties on the moment, knowing he walked the knife's edge of failure. Again, cutting her off, he exclaims in his best Leonitus-inspired cry.

" I! AM! RHODOCHROSITE!"

There is silence in the room for many moments. The receding levels of adrenaline leaving him light-headed, he starts when Ruby speaks.

"Umm, Brodocrytite, I appreciate your support, but we were actually just looking for an IT intern here at the offices. I was coming to tell you that your drug test failed. I'm, uh, sorry. You'll now be escorted off the premises."

The shock doesn't wear off until late that night. His therapeutic session of Counter Strike did nothing but make him think of the battles he would never wage. Even his nightly ritual of peering through his plexi-glass computer window at his beloved Ruby did nothing to assuage the bitter taste of defeat. It wasn't until he lay his weary head upon his pillow, too exhausted to even secure his headgear for the night, that the hazy image of his familiar mountain dojo came into view. Peace would come as he once again crossed blades with his vixen of battle. His leather-clad heroine of affordability and performance. His Ruby.

OK IDK what happened, I had posted this up before and now it's gone...weird. Anyway here it is again:

Every hero needs a tech/weapons specialist...James Bond had Q, Blade had Whistler, Batman had Alfred and Ruby could have Star (after the Midnight Star Ruby). She would have a much different style to Ruby, perhaps with more of an anime look about her. Longer flowing hair would make a nice counterpoint to Ruby's much shorter hair and a purple hue would go well with not only the anime look but the actual ruby she was inspired by (the midnight star ruby has a much deeper shade of red, almost purple). Of course she would be exceptionally intelligent (what specialist isn't) and while her skillset is much better suited to help Ruby along the way rather than fight alongside her, because of her vast knowledge of weaponry she could easily hold her own in battle.

God, I feel like such a geek!

BTW I have a feeling duplo has done this sort of thing before

Alright, so ruby was fighting in Tibet, near the border of Nepal, using her snowboarding skills to flee from some uninspired Ninjas, and she ran across a rather large sherpa. His name is Norbu, the Tibetan name for "A precious gem". The was traveling home from his latest expedition to Everest when he was involved in the fight. His huge frame, and high altitude lifestyle makes him very strong, and very fast, while still being able to cover long distances on foot. He isn't a particularly handsome man, but who needs to be handsome when you can crush a man with your fists? He uses an Ice pick like a master, and his rapelling gear like a chain whip. Since Ruby is a stealthy woman, Norbu acts as a defensive partner when the hair begins to fly. He causes distractions when needed, and can hold his own versus many opponents.

Special skills would be long range attacks and booth babe alerter. he would be helpful on mission of eradication and of course those missions that involve a little more of a "hands on" approach.

OK, here's my take on the Rudy scene ... Sure it has a few rough edges that needs to be worked out, but the foundation is there.

Rudy's partner should be someone who is there, but not seen in the action directly. A person who communicates via a direct private linkup with Rudy on the mission as it plays out. This in turn will not take away the focus of the viewer on Rudy’s skillful actions.

This person can be seen on a holographic display that floats in space before Rudy or heard through an earpiece. Certain special glasses allow Rudy to see electronic data of the mission right before her eyes.

Let's welcome Rudy’s partner as Dr. Sanders.

Dr. Sanders has the knowledge and innovation that makes Ruby shine forth in her skills by providing stunning DX10 advances of the simplest gadgets for a mighty demonstration of power and visual effects on the screen.

Dr. Sanders and Ruby communicates via a private linkup with one another as the mission plays out.

Dr. Sanders is a tall, educated man in both the sciences and world history. Dr. Sanders is only a few years older than Rudy and comes from a forgotten rich family out of Sunnyvale, California.

That's right, Dr. Sanders is the brain of the operations coming from the AMD side of the scene while Rudy is the action and special effects of the ATI part of the picture.

With their combined efforts, they can bring down the evil empire that seeks world domination by controlling all of the world’s intelligence in various technology markets.

This partnership is a visualization and drama of both AMD and ATI. This combines their history and advancements of leadership technology to the end user in such a way that the drama and action plays out a truly defined legacy to be proud of.

Even though Apollyon dislikes the use of weapons he is still very capable of shooting down targets at long ranges with a sniper rifle.

Ruby's partner could be an older lady that gives her the missions and sometimes helps her on the harder ones. She is very similar to Ruby(perhaps her mother?) She usually acts as her mentor, but comes around when Ruby is out of her element and often brings new technology with her. She should look like Ruby would in her forties. Because she's been doing this longer than Ruby, she has more contacts in the field and has more experience with older systems. Her real name is unknown, but her codename is Lady Crimson.

Which is how he met Ruby at the S.O.U.R. affair.

They were both assigned to gather intel during the covert operation until Ruby's cover was blown and Garnet (Aka Grim) had to assist her in the following mop up. As we all know Ruby wouldn't run if her cover was blown, she'd break out a big can of whoop on it.

Immediately following the mop up they split up only to find each other assigned to the same debriefing. They were members of the same organization ATI but assigned to different sections.

Liking his 6'6" frame with his jet black hair and emerald colored eyes Ruby requested him to work parallel assignments on her cases. The rest is classified I'm afraid. I'd tell ya but Ruby and Grim would have to kill you.

Dang your making my brain hurt, (pokes a stick at the hamster and prods him in the the wheel), ok mmmm has to be different than the others..... not used as much type idea as none are really original....

Mmmmmm a rival that is a competitive "friend". Someone that competes for the biggest most audacious missions, they respect each other and don't exactly hate/love more that they are of a kindred spirit and if one found the other was walking into a trap would go out of their way to make sure that the trap was foiled in some spectacular way at the very last second when all seemed lost. While her style seems more brash his would be subtle when possible but you know how subtle explosives typically are. He would be an older man of native American decent that still pokes his head in the action now and again when it suits him. He is past his prime but he has the experience and wile of a Coyote that gets him out of the tight spots should he find him self in one. He would be called Three Irons as he would always have at least three guns on him out of habit more than need. He has known hardship and struggle that has been beaten that into his visage, his skin like windburned tanned rough leather. His hair wiry and black with streaks of gray. His eyes black and piercing like a rattler ready to strike. He can survive in any environment. The contacts that he has are vast and his ears sensitive to the subtleties of how a person might say something but mean another. He would see Ruby as a rough version of him self that he would hate so see move on to the spirit world just yet.


The missions he would be helpful on would be those that require subtlety or gathering intelligence on a target that is very hard to get info on through conventional means. Where patience, stealth and cunning get you what you want. Or a specially choreographed sequence of explosions is called for that needs to be rapidly setup. Or if a very long range snipe is needed with any firearm that happens to be handy. He is particularly adept at stalking up behind a target, quietly knifing them and pulling them back into the shadows.


I might need to refine the idea some as this was just an off the cuff idea. Hamster needs a rest he hasn't worked that hard on the wheel for a while.

Hi, nice forums you guys have here. I'm looking forward to becoming an active member here.

Anyways my version of what sidekick ruby should have is:
Her partner would be a guy, named Jade(think AMD), he would look like a average built guy who would be very fast(hypertransport) and have the latest technology(native quad core, integrated memory controller anyone?) Of course his armor would be a little on the green side and he would perform very well on missions when paired with ruby(Spider platform). The missions that he would do the most would require innovative thinking and speed.

Well Barbie has Ken so who would Ruby have Unlike Ken who is not anatomically correct (freak), Ruby's partner would have all of his parts and go by the name of "Keith". Keith would have awesome cyber skills and worship the goddess Ruby and all of here awesomeness. Keith would also use his awesome cyber skills to help Ruby defeat the evil denizens of darkness. And they all lived happily ever after, the end
